I was thinking about how much I should charge for a stage hypnotist show. When first starting out, should one charge little or should one charge a premium and just work like a mad animal to produce a show of value.
I remember when I started magic, most people in my area were charging 150-175 for a children's birthday party. I was new, but felt I had a great show. So I decided to charge $297+ for my shows. I did so, but worked hard to provide incredible value. I was booked frequently. I would even tell people calling in that I was the highest priced magician in town, but here is why... benefit 1,2,3...etc. I know the average price is $1500 a show, but I'd like to charge $2500-5000 a show. |

Produce a show of value at the outset. Start the best, charge the most... from the beginning. And don;t start then, until you are ready to be the best...

Next time you get a phone call from a high school, try quoting $5000 and see how quickly you hear a clicking sound. |

Spinnata is correct... you will do well to average 1K per show in any kind of regional market. Sure the 1500-2500 gigs are out there, but so are the 600-800 gigs...
A working performer will work, and just let the fees average higher and higher

The other thing to realize/consider is that different venues will support different levels of fees.
A college show might be able to bring a higher fee than a high school show - and a corporate show might well be able to bring a fee that's twice as high - or not - depending on the budget and the purpose of the show. If you're working at a club, you might find yourself splitting door charges or ticket prices. Private parties can range from way low to way high, depending on who has the cash to foot the bill, and their perceived value of the entertainment for the outcome of the event. Do some research on the going rates for different venues in your area, and aim for middle + ground fees as you build your reputation. Good luck! |
