Hey everyone,
I was wondering where I could learn about becoming a stage hypnotist, as well as being able to perform for corporate events. I am new to all of this, so I am looking for some resources and books which are comprehensive and straightforward on the subject. Thanks a lot, Bryan |

There are a lot of old threads that will point you in the direction of DVD's, books and classes. A lot people will recommend Ormond McGills book, the Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnosis as a starting point, but Jeff Ronnings Guide to Modern Stage Hypnosis is much more practical and not outdated. My book, The Little Black Book of Stage Hypnosis Secrets is pretty good, and Anthony's book "reality is Plastic" is awesome. You you will find good classes in Las Vegas from people like Jeff Ronning, Brian Dean and Marc Savard. You can also learn a lot from DVD's. I think this is the best way to learn in my opionion. Clivk the banner ad in this section, go to http://www.HypnosisGurus.com or click the link in my signature. I carry all of the books mentioed including anthonys and ronnings.

Bryan, there are a LOT of resources for learning stage hypnosis. My first suggestion would be to be sure at some point to take a live course with someone you respect and who is respected in stage hypnosis (therapy training is great, but you're asking about stage). However, before you shell out of the live class . . . see as many stage hypnotists as you can, go to the shows, get the DVDs, and more. As wide a variety as possible so you can see that while many of the shows are similar in structure, the really good ones eventually bring their own personality and showmanship into the thing. Also, get every book you can get your grubbies on. Personally, I still love Ormond's book (however, it is exhaustive and can be confusing for some folks and does have material that one definitely should NEVER perform). The Geoff Ronning book is reccommendable as he has some interesting takes on things and does have a business model orientation that many folks do not include. Jerry Valley's book is pretty good with solid info and outlines for three complete shows. I would suggest that you look at the structures to see how they are put together but do not use them for your own show as there are hundreds of folks who have the same book and who have taken Valley's live course who are performing that very show. Speaking of show structure, when I was starting out, I outlined just about every show I saw. I would sit down and make an outline of every part of the structure to see how it was put together (induction, testing, group effects, individual effects, posthypnotics, the works) as well as noting how he worked - on mic, off mic, with or without assistants, music, etc. I live pretty isolated from the world of stage hypnosis and so have had to be aggressive about keeping up to date on my own. You will find such an approach can be helpful. Since Nongard's material is readily available in the magic shops and Richard actually is a nice guy, his material would not be a bad place to start. Anthony Jacquin's plastic reality set is getting some good play of late as well. I would honestly hold off on the large 10 and 20 disk sets some folks have until you've got a grounding in some of the more basic skills and have practiced simple things like inductions and suggestibility effects and the like. Speaking of which, the instant & rapid inductions and suggestibility DVDs in my comprehensive set are worthwhile for performers - http://www.briandavidphillips.com/products/core.html - they can be purchased separately but the set is a more cost-effective buy. With any DVD program or book, however, you really need to actually practice the skills with genuine humans. Just watching or reading won't do you any good. This, of course, is one of the advantages inherent in a solid live class as your fellow students are willing guinea pigs. However, if you don't have access to a class, then start a practice group with some friends - or find a previously established one in your area if available - or, go out into the world and gently get folks to volunteer. All the best, Brian

Bryan, if you're not already a member, consider joining the Hypnosis Technique Exchange at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HypnosisTechniqueExchange and mine the message archives for discussions of techniques, gags, and more. The group is not specific to stage hypnosis but there are plenty of stage and recreational hypnotists who post there that you will find plenty of information that fits your needs and interests and more.
All the best, Brian
