Hi there. This is my first time here asking for help - I would really appreciate any help anyone could give me. I'm looking for a way to make a rocket/spaceship for someone to appear in. I've seen one trunk on the web where people can disappear but not sure how it works and how I could make a rocket/space ship for someone to appear in. My husband and I are doing a schools tour with a bullying show we are writing. I'd LOVE to have this rocket/spaceship at the beginning of our show - and he appears in it. Any suggestions? Thanks SO much
Jodie PS. Even if you know of a website/dealer selling something else similar with an "appearing" effect, that would help. |

About the cheapest you are going to find in a professionally made trick that will do what you want is from Creative Magic. Their illusion that looks like a set of dice would do the job, is light, travels easily, and is fairly inexpensive as far as such illusions go. http://www.creativemagic.net
Next would be to acquire a copy of Mark Wilson's complete course in magic, Barnes and Noble and most major book chains carry it. It has several illusions that are fairly simple to do, and cost little to make (arabian tent, victory cartons, etc.) which would do what you want, but no rocket ship, though once you learn how to do the appearance, then you might be able to modify the exterior to somewhat resemble a rocket or space ship. Mark also has a video series on DVD that is an introduction to illusions, and covers a lot of the various principles used in illusions. To be honest at this stage in the game, with you having so few posts, and clearly not having a lot of knowledge of magic, no one on the board is going to tell you a secret of how to do such. We never reveal secrets in open forums. Mark's DVD and also his Complete course in Magic can be obtained directly from Mark at http://www.markwilsonmagic.com There is also a set of books on how to make inexpensive illusions using duct tape and pvc pipe. If you do a search using the Café search engines and probably look at pvc or duct tape, it will show up the books and site fron which to obtain them. I believe a Café member, Spellbinder, sells these books on his site http://www.magicnook.com Also Creative Magic has a tent illusion that would do the job for you, and that tent with a little paint could be made to look like some sort of space ship or nose cone. Though it is not exactly cheap, but compared to most stage illusions it is very cheap. To have what you desire custom made by one of the major illusion makers (and this would require you already having a method) could cost you easily 10,000 dollars and up. I can't remember the exact price of the Shadow Tent from Creative but it was under 2,000, and again, packs very light, small, easy set up and tear down. But having a method and an apparatus is not all you need to do a successful stage illusion, you need a knowledge of angles and other magic and performance principles. One other that might work is some form of the tip over trunk, I believe it is in Mark Wilson's book, if not definitely on his Illusion DVDs. It can be made of cardboard and duct tape, is fairly simple, and I suppose you can at least draw or paint something like a space ship or rocket on it.

Jim Gerrish has an "Appearing /Vanishing Archway Illusion" in his PVC Pipe Illusion Book #1 on my site. This is a tall "cabinet" made of PVC Pipe (but it can also be built of wood if you prefer), that could be designed to look like a space ship standing on a launch pad. You might take off the "front hatch" so they can see inside, and you wonder where the astronaut is, because no one is inside. Meanwhile, the "count-down" is going on and you don't have time to put the hatch back on... suddenly there is a flash at the bottom, as if the spaceship is taking off, but the astronaut appears inside and steps out of the "space ship." On with the show!
http://www.magicnook.com/pvcpipe1.htm Then scroll down to number 7, Appearing /Vanishing Archway Illusion Good luck with your project!

Is your bullying show a magic show or some other type of performance? These types of illusions require space, and sometimes a stage. If you're perfoming in classrooms or even the gym you may have a problem. Pick up a copy of "Victory Carton Illusions" from Trickshop.com. This will give you a good idea if what you want to do is even feasible. Jim |

Having something like this made is very feasible, but it would almost certainly be expensive. Also, to made an adult male appear it would have to be fairly large, so you would need to figure transport, etc. If you are driving then pulling trailer, etc. would be workable.
