Heres how I feel about exposure. Ive been thinking about this and know ill prob get flamed for this but I have been thinking in depth. Let me start off by saying I am not for exposure at all. Sometimes people worry about things and when you sit back if you look at it and truly examine it there might not be so much to worry about. Yes, magic is an art form and we depend upon these secrets. The common spectators know that we don't do real magic they all know some method is employed and they do not know the secret. Now that they know the method does that mean they wont come and see our shows? There are websites that give out KFCs secret recipe but people still eat there and you realize how complicated this stuff is and you say I'm better off not trying to do this myself but to buy the product legally. Peopl.e know that movies aren't real but shows about how movies are made don't kill the industry pirating does (and this is a HUGE issue in magic these days since these download website type things) No because they still want to be entertained. If you are a fan of David Copperfield and know how he does his stuff you will still go see his show regardless. If someone who wasn't a magic fan watches the show they might now buy tickets to a magic show because they are interested in it now.
That being said is it right? No! Does it take the fun out of the magic? Yes! Does it ruin the show? Yes! Will you get wise as people saying "I know how you did that?" Yes! It does stink because it is the equivalent of broadcasting a prime time special on Santa Claus the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy and takes the fun out of it for lots of people Now I am not for exposure at all but I do think that the worrying and what not is why they make these shows cause they are looking for that reaction.
Thanks,

MyNetworkTV obtained the rights to air thirteen new specials in the US during fall of 2008. The new specials will have all new illusions never before shown in any of the other specials. The first episode will air on October 6th, and then every Monday after that.
After the sheer volume of illusions they exposed in the first 6 specials (inc. street magic revealed), then I dread to fear what they will be exposing this time round. There isn't much left, especially for thirteen episodes. There going to have to reveal the good stuff to keep the show going. |

I'm surprised no one has commented on the narrator's voice that is used in this TV series. I think his attempt to be "sauve" and "cool" when talking about the "lovely ladies" who are assisting the magician is rather lame. Every so often, he'll make some kind of wisecrack remark that is supposed to be funny but comes across as very lame.
That said, though, I do enjoy these shows. Before the effect is revealed, I like to try to figure it out myself. Usually there isn't enough time between the effect and the revelation to do so. And I am always struck by how simple the methods are to some of these so-called "big" illusions. I highly doubt people will remember this stuff if they watch the shows. And if they do, so what? They will probably still be amazed and awestruck when seeing an illusion done "live" even though they might remember how it's done. So much more goes into a magic performance than just "how it's done." There's the music, the lighting, the general staging, the look of the props and sets, the "lovely ladies" (hahaha), the general persona of the magician, etc.. It all adds up to something special than could ever be achieved by just isolating one of those elements and fixating on that. An example of this is Copperfields' "Portal" effect. I've read online various theories as to how it's done and probably know how the effect is done using high-tech video work, etc.. But seeing the effect performed live is still an emotional experience due to all the other elements of the act working together. |

For me, and I'm sure I'll likely get flamed, I watch "Magic's Biggest Secrets Finally Revealed" for a better understanding of stage magic.
I belong to my local magic club, and we are lucky to get GREAT lecturers, but most if not all lectures focus on smaller illusions. Things that the lecturers can pack in and sell, which makes total sense... that is their livelihood, and there certainly is interest in it. But the flip side of that is, there is no cost-effective way for someone in my position in life to learn a wide range of stage illusions. I have found a few books... but largely if I want to learn a method or understand a method I would have to buy a DVD (if its even available) or simply buy a full scale stage illusion that runs thousands of dollars to understand it. Its cost prohibitive (and yes, I understand the reasons for that as well...) for a **student** of magic that simply wants the understanding of it. While it sucks that the whole wide world (or at least those that watch the show) learn about these methods all at once... I am certainly grateful for the education that I'm receiving. OK, flame away... |
