I was doing quite a bit of searching here, on demo tapes and trying to get into the cruise ship industry. There is quite a bit of useful information here! One thing however, and this could be something that I don't know due to lack of knowledge of this field, but what exactly is the venue for a cruise ship?
I mean, we see mainly illusionists working carnival and such names, but is there REALLY ANY room for perhaps close up entertainers? Maybe not close up rooms, but what about video cameras and projectors? I know quite a few magicians use these anyways, but most have stage illusions or are illusionists to bat. So perhaps what I am asking is this, is there a cruise ship industry or are there any former close up magicians that worked a cruise ship? Im not saying a totally done with cards and coins show, but one that maybe does not involve solely expensive large scale illusions? |

Perhaps I should rephrase a few things. I started up as a close up strolling magician. In fact I still stroll and hold close up shows and executive work to this day! But I also have a STAGE "close up show." I have a professional camera and a projector that I use to project certain effects, as well as my material that doesn't need it. I know a lot of magicians want to know if their "strolling magic" will work on a cruise ship, I am wondering if my close up magic turned into a stage show will work. or for those that work on ships, have they seen anyone doing this?

I've worked ships for many years. Yes, a few illusionists do close up on a large screen but as part of a larger stage show. I've never seen anyone or heard of anyone exclusively doing close up.

We've been doing mostly ships for several years now and we do a few close up routines with video cameras in our illusion show, but as Greg said, it's unlikely that an act would get booked solely for a close up show. It's not uncommon for an illusion or comedy magic act to do a seperate close up show in addition to the stage show though. We do a seperate afternoon show, and I know that Greg Gleason and Shawn Farquar both had seperate close up shows as well. Right now the cruise industry is the hardest to break into we've ever seen, and we know of lots of great acts who are getting less and less dates because of the economy.
Hey Greg, you seriously need to make another post...666 posts? That can't be good... We miss you on the Vision, it's been pretty quiet around here without you causing trouble! - Mistie |

I was privileged to be an audience member for one of Shawn's close-up shows on a Norwegian Alaska inside passage cruise two summers ago. It was well received by the audience ! The big video screen filled the stage, so no one missed a thing. He had a live camera operator who moved around to get the best shots during the performance. Audience members came up onto the stage to assist with certain tricks, making it even more intimate for the BIG crowd (it was a very large theater, considering it was on a ship). It was obvious from the crowd's reaction that they liked the close-up show even more than the illusion show, though I enjoyed both equally !

So as not to blur the answer to the original poster's question, Knight Magic and Greg Otto (Jerskin) got it right with their posts saying:
"it's unlikely that an act would get booked solely for a close up show" and "a few illusionists do close up on a large screen but as part of a larger stage show" Any close-up included within a show will be seen in those terms, ie as part of a bigger stage show. An entire close-up show is only going to be in addition to the show that actually gets you booked, (ie your stage show) and often has nothing to do with the actual contract of engagement but is included by the performer as a means to increase their income by giving themselves another opportunity to sell magic tricks to the passengers. A friend of mine caught Farquar on an NCL Ship in Mexico this January - said it was a great show. And I was able to see Gleason on a Ship in the Caribbean - sorry I just read the post by Knight Magic and had to comment. Gleason's show is enormous - especially for being on a ship - I couldn't believe it. Great show.
