Okay, for some of us they never REALLY went away (you know who I'm talking to...youse what get all weepy when Ally Sheedy does her soliloquy in TBC). BUT...
VH1 has been presenting 80 Hours of the 80s all weekend, and thanks to the very un-80s miracle of TiVo, I got most of it I saw my first music video in, I dunno, 1982 I think. "The Look Of Love," by ABC...and it was ASTOUNDING. OMG, it was like a Duchamp painting come to life...the colour, the images, the sight gags, and the music, all blending into something absurd and strange and oddly compelling, beginning a love for the art form that continues to this day. Yeah, yeah, I know...there was a lot of schlock produced as well, most of it by Twisted Sister and others of the metal ilk, but, come on. Can you actually watch "Don't Come Around Here No More" and deny that music videos, at times, transcended their record company executives' intended marketing purpose and became instead, Art? All right, Wise Guy, maybe you can...but where else you gonna see a young, thin Penn & Teller runnin' a Monte on Run DMC? Leland |

Ah, the 80s, when videos were fun and MTV still played them!

I knew I shouldn't have canceled my cable! My only memories of the 80s are Atari and Neil Diamond. The Gulf war though...that I remember.

Speaking of the 80's, one of MTV's original VJ's, Alan Hunter is a local guy who owns "WorkPlay", a local entertainment/studio/office facility here in Birmingham that I perform at occassionally. Not that big of a deal, but a definite reminder for me of how long ago the 80's actually were.
