Last Saturday was my biggest hats ever, though, not as big as Danny's I'm sure. I almost got in to the 3 digits. This is what I did to draw my edge...nothing. Whenever I tried my carney style way of drawing a crowd, no one would stop. So I took a few steps back, didn't try to get people to stop. I just stood there doing some hat manipulations with my bowler (having it fly off my head, putting it on up side down, loosing it on my elbow, physical comedy stuff) just goofing off, actually practicing. Someone would stop, "Show me some magic" and from there I would run with it to draw my crowd. I also changed where I was standing. Instead of being out in the open, I stood between two park benches at one pitch and between two big plants at another pitch. Whatever I did last weekend to make my hats, I hope I can do it again this weekend.

Some good items of strategy there friend!
Busking is like the recipe for rabbit stew. Line one of the recipe reads First, you catch a rabbit! Before you can draw a crowd, you need to draw that one person. sometimes it is easy, and sometimes not. But they are all easier after the first one. As for standing in the open. That can work, but you have to create your own space definitions, using your own props or your own presence. It isn't easy. And I think you have experienced that doesn't generally give the kind of "comfort zone" that you need to create. People are like sheep. The will follow, and they need to be told/know where to stand. Having fixed items like the benches etc. to border you, gives them safe definitions that they can relate to. I liked what you did to draw your edge. You acted like you werent interested in them. And that made them interested in you. Excellent reverse pyschology. Act like you are having fun, and others will want to get in on it. Keep at it, and keep sharing. Anyone who performs and doesn't analyze/critique all aspects of his performance is going to be stuck where they are. You, on the other hand, are on your way to better things, as you are not content to just do the show and walk away. You are thinking about what happened and why, and how to make it work more in your favor. You definitely are on your way to fatter hats! Go get em! And keep us posted. BroDavid

Hey Kasper,
Glad to hear you did so well. Let's hope it works like that every weekend. You never know what works and what doesn't in the "real world" until you give it a go. Like I said to you before: if it works, keep it...if it dosen't,change it.... Be sure to let us know how this weekend comes out. Break-A-Leg... Don |

Yes, it's good to have several ideas!....different ways..so when one is failing the other works. What was your largest hat....close to 3 figures..or was that a days work?

Always. I am always up for a critique. I'm playing the smaller crowd area.(think restaurants and art galleries on each side separated by a 15-20' wide sidewalk with tables and chair) I'll take you to the big crowd area so you can draw in your 150+ crowd. I am also auditioning this weekend for a restaurant gig too.
My dream is to do a restaurant or two a week and street magic and drop my boring job at this law firm, hehe. |
