Hi Chris,
I appreciate your support. I'd just like to emphasize that my claim is not in regards ANY Floating Match. Don Wayne's wonderful floating match was out at about the same time and uses a completely different method. My ONLY CLAIM is to the original use of "threads combined with BENDING the card" to create the illusion of levitation. This was the original contribution made by Cosmosis. NO ONE had done it prior to 1985/86 and any subsequent work using the same principle, or any variation of it, should (at the very least) be credited. Cheers mate. Ben

Whatever the titans say about who invented the match trick (an important issue of intellectual property rights), the basic practical point remains that the Fairytale Rabbit House is poorly designed with regard to practicality and portability. It would be wonderful if Mr. Borkor could answer the specific problems addressed above. They are real; the prop is impractical and not worth purchasing for those reasons unless the maker can explain some alternative. He should consider changing the plan of the trick to account for the complaints raised above.

So, this thread now just shimmies away into the archives of past-posts without outstanding questions being answered. Interesting, telling....

There are still some unanswered questions about the base and engineering . . .

I don't buy Bob Bokor's explanation about the effect he says he created. It's Ben Harris' Cosmosis. If he can't admit that, I wouldn't buy any of his products.

The Cosmosis questions are good ones and ultimately the most important. I don't know Cosmosis, but this seems to touch on critical intellectual property rights issues.
Mine is much more basic: why in the world would you design the base of the Fairy Tale Rabbit House so that it has to be assembled and disassembled every single time you use it (involving screwdrivers, etc.) when you could have just used foldable wood planks which you fold flush with the bottom of the prop when finished. Otherwise it's a beautiful prop. Same goes for the "Forgetful Freddy" wizard, which is large and colorful, as your ad copy states, but which is supposed to be screwed into base for every performance. Who wants to spend their time assembling bases and adding 2 or 3 minutes to set up of each trick? To me these wooden props should just be placed on the side table and be ready to go. If I have to spend time prepping a trick, it has to be for a little more magic than either of these deliver. Not to criticize the effects, which are predictably fine, but the very basic lack of consideration of set up time and convenience as design objectives. On a constructive note, these issues would seem to be very easily be addressed for subsequent production runs. Also, the block base of the Rabbit House is huge and heavy. Shrinking it to the common planks which fold under the base would seem like a money saver for the maker. |

Ben,
I have returned here for the first time since my last post - I was not ignoring you! By the way, is there anyway on the Café to receive an email when there is a new reply to a post one made? Ben- yes, I agree, the afterthought/add on to the main Ghostly Match effect is the same as your Cosmosis. I will provide credit on our next run, and am making a note to that effect now. Would you also like me to add this to our site's product description (which I can do much more quickly?) |

Dear Mumblemore,
I just found your post about our new wood kid show magic props here - I will copy in the reply I just made under another topic, so the visitors here know I am addressing your points: (I am slightly editing this one to address some different points you mentioned here): Thanks for your good words about our Kid Show magic products, as well as constructive criticism. Yes, they are really beautiful props. I spent 4 years of my life making prototypes, showing them to professional kid show performers, and kept integrating their improvements to make them the best kid show props available. I hired a Disney schooled artist to create our really beautiful artwork - as you say, "eye candy" - kids get really excited by these props! Your points are well noted, and I will address them: WIZARD BOY: 1. Our base is intentionally heavy - there is absolutely no wobble when the head appears in the balloon! Our base is beautiful - almost 2-1/2 lbs - black with gold spotting. These are baked in an oven to obtain this really nice finish. For the 20 years I did kid show performances, I had the old Forgetful Freddie - I always kept the base attached. I had no space issue. Café reader: Your opinions? (I will take them into consideration for future runs) Tricks that have a base - do you remove and replace bases to your tricks such as Forgetful Freddie for every performance, or do you assemble the base once and transport it that way? FAIRY TALE RABBIT HOUSE: 1. I supplied the base unattached as an improvement, suggested by the kid show professionals I showed the prototypes to. Some performers want the base, others don't. If you prefer using it without the base, there is no need to attach it. We have not tested removing and replacing the screws numerous times - as that might strip the holes - so keeping the base off would be a one time permanent thing. You could also screw in 2 small pieces of wood that could act as swiveling feet if you want to stand the house on your table, but not use the base. Using the base makes it easier to operate the rabbits with our exclusive puppet feature - that is both the travelling of FUNNY BUNNY left to right, as well as hopping up and down; and swaying back & forth as if to say: HA HA, YOU CAN'T SEE ME! By holding the base tilted slightly back, the kids cannot see any of your hand motion. 2. I always show the rabbits in the hat or house. Feel free to call me if you'd like my assistance on how to do that. I also made the house so both doors can open in the front and the back. Have fun with your new props.
