I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the problem of getting back into kid's magic after being out of it for more than a decade. I am hopeful that the community here can help me out.
I enjoy doing children's shows more than any other kind of magic, but being so long out of practice means that I am effectively starting over. I have one show I can feel pretty good doing, and am working on creating another. But I need to find places where I can go and do my show for free in order to refine it. (I don't believe in making anyone pay me while I practice.) I have a day job currently, so I'll need to go where I can find kid audiences in the evenings or on weekends. If anyone has any thoughts about (A) how to find these audiences, and (B) how to approach the responsible adults for bookings, I am all ears. Many thanks... JGB

Go where the kids are:Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Boys and Girls Clubs of America. I would advise "Big Deals" like Blue and Gold Dinners that would have you competing with your fellow magicians who would depend on the income.

Your church, family parties, kids or grandkids classroom, donate to Child Haven, Boy and Girls Club, Etc Etc. Non-Profits are always looking for people to donate the time if you have it.
Those are just a few I can think of myself. Best of luck and welcome back. Cheers, B-Rad

Check the shelter homes around your area - mothers with children who have had to runthere could use a bright spot in their day. Same with the children's ward at the hospital.
Are there any special camps in your area, such as cancer victims or burn survivors? Contact the local elementary schools and see if they are putting on any type of carnival for Fall (Harvest, Halloween, whatever) and would like a magic show. Ed |

To get started I told my family and friends that I was performing magic, then worked unpaid for a year at week-end parties, bbqs and leaving does. I probably did a dozen in that time and eagerly awaited the feed-back. (None of these friends could have afforded a real magician anyway so I wasn't stealing anyone else's business). Gradually, I started taking paid gigs when a fellow magician was unavailable. This then cascaded by word of mouth.
It might also be worth checking at your local library for a list of voluntary organisations that work with children or see if it's ok for you to put up a poster offering your services to these groups.
