That hat thread reminded me to ask this. Does anyone know any good hat shops in the North of England. By North I mean Lancashire, Yorkshire, Derbyshire etc.

There should be plenty of flat hat (Andy Capp)shops there? Last time I was there, years ago, all the shops seemed to sell flat hats..
Gents Outfitters, as they're still known up there, I imagine, should have them. Probably not quite what you're looking for though, eh? Cheers! DCB

The Orvis shop in Harrogate has some great 'trilby' type hats that can take a good folding up without harm.
They come in various colours and cost around twenty some pounds.

Thanks for the advice guys.
DCB - got a lovely flat cap at the start of the summer in a green tweed. It's right at home on my head now and I've even managed to fall asleep in the pub with it on still gripping my pint of bitter... on the magical side I found that there is a cavity at the front of the hat above the peak. If you conceal three silver dollars in there (or £5 coins in my particular case) they can be held there by gripping them through the fabric and the hat can be used "a la miser's dream" for a very clean looking production of four coins (one held out to start with). When the coins are "thrown into the hat they can be seen sliding down the inside of the cap. Can't do that with a base ball cap! "Neal's flat cap peak grip" Tom - Cheers for the tip. I'll have to check out the Orvis shop. My lady's folks live in Harrogate and I go there every once in a while. Thanks Kondini - I'll give them a look. It's a bit tricky buying a hat over t'internet though. You really want to try them on. I'm starting to get an idea what my size is now so I might give them a try. I did manage to buy a lovely crushable wool Fedora from a shop in Hebden Bridge this weekend. It was expensive enough to feel proper but not enough to ruin the shape of my pockets (ie. bulges still intact). I got it from a shop called "Hat Therapy". They mainly sell ladies hats made by the proprietor. They do tend to have a few mens' hats in stock and I saw mine in the window - it was made by Christys'. They do also make custom hats though. Don't know if that's of a help to anyone but there you go. Neal |

If you ever get as far as Edinburgh, there's a good hat shop in the Grassmarket. Candlemakers Row, I think. Men and Womens hats. I bought a red top hat and a nice red fedora, similar to the one in the pic, only a much nicer feel to it. They also stock jugglers hats.
You got £5.00 coins? I didn't know there were such things... :+) I've never ever seen a £5.00 coin. However, I'm in London this weekend.. I'll investigate. Cheers! DCB

Go to the post office if you want £5 coins. Don't queue up for ages at the windows, go to the shops bits where they sell stationery etc.
I had Jamie Schoolcraft make me a [ for mine. Only downside is they're not silver like dollars. There are some old silver crowns (same size as the £5 coins). £5 are legal tender just not in general circulation. I know this for a fact as I had to spend some 7 or 8 years ago when I was having a tight month! You can pick up Crowns from coin shops for 50p. |
