Tonight I had friends over (about ten) and they wanted to see "something".
After my "coins throught the table" and "the card from the mouth" I finished with "cups and balls". Did the straight Vernon routine. First passage: excellent! They enjoyed a lot. Blown away from the Mora spin. Second passage: ok. Not so smooth. Some exitation, but don't know why. Third passage (load): ok. Great success! Final load(fruits) get always a great response. At the end of the routine I was going too fast (worried about the loading?) Overall I was not happy with my perfomance. Althought it is a long time now I am performing C&B I should be smoother, relaxed, know my routine without exitation. Ok, the response was good but I would rate my routine 5/10. A bit frustrating....... |

I'm just about to embark on the trail of the cups and balls.. and I think the Vernon routine would be a good point to start.
Here's a question for you all... How long, in hours, do you think it would take, to master the Vernon version of the cups and balls? No Audience. No extra chat. Just the mechanics. What you all think? And how about the wand spin? As a separate item? I have a problem with most of the wands I've had so far... they seem to be too heavy..(hard wood and brass ends, etc) The best one I've had so far, is just a wooden dowel cut to my size.. Is that odd? Cheers, all of you,... DCB

I started with much easier (and shorter) routines than Vernon's, so I can't say how long I think it would take but I think perhaps starting on something else might work out better.
On the wand, a lot of people mention using dowels and drumsticks. So you're not alone there at all. I use an aluminium rod (Mercury wand) covered with heat shrink tubing. |

Not sure you can "master" the Vernon routine (any routine) without an audience. Sure, you can get the mechanics down after a week or so of practice but it will take a whole lot longer than that to master it.
Brings to mind something I read a while back about Vernon himself. Vernon, it was said, would spend hours on end learning the mechanics of a trick........and after he had learned the trick, that's when the real work would start because he would then spend night after night, week after week trying to make all his moves look natural! The amount of time to master just the mechanics depends on if you currently perform cups and balls. If you currently perform the cups and balls it would probably take weeks, if not it would take months. Both estimates do not include the wand spin. The wand spin could take longer. "I have a problem with most of the wands I've had so far... they seem to be too heavy..(hard wood and brass ends, etc) The best one I've had so far, is just a wooden dowel cut to my size.. Is that odd?" It is a bit odd. Only because most people like a heavier wand for juggling type manipulations. You may be trying to do the spin too fast. Try slowing the wand spin down. Also learn the spin before you do the spin and the move. Chris |
