I have a big last minute interview tomorrow on a national radio station.
However, I can't do my go-to-rock-solid-radio-interview routine. I'd love to do something really good but with less than 18 hours till I'm on the air, I'm stuck! Help! |

Thanks Alikzam!
I didn't do the ID but you got my mind thinking along the theme of 'caller suggest card over phone and magician reveals it'. I perform Pineapple Surprise. |

Do you own Jim Steinmeyer's books with exactly the type of tricks you are looking for?

Here we go! The article describes The Catchpenny Club, which I run, but the effect was performed by none other than Mr. Tim Ellis. |

This has gotten me thinking about the factors that going into choosing an effect to put on the air. Here are a few factors to consider:-
IMAGINATION Radio is theatre of the mind. The audience does not have to see the effect to experience it. If the magician can create a strong mental picture of the effect, they will feel the emotional impact. For example, I often perform the human blockhead on radio, hammering a nail into my head. The audience can not see the nail or my head but they can HEAR it going in, they can FEEL the presenters disgust and they can PICTURE my description. [b}INTERACTIVITY[/b] If the audience can be involved in the effect, they will excuse any missing information or visuals. For example, two randomly selected cards (e.g. two and king) are found next to each other in a deck of cards. The magician asks people at home to check if they have the same thing happening with their own decks of cards. KICKER FINISH The magician performs the effect and then gives a non-radio kicker. For example, a card is selected and revealed on air. The magician then instructs people to check out the classifieds and they see an advertisment say "JOE BLOGS WILL PICK THE KING OF HEARTS." SIMPLICITY Radio effects should be super simple to understand. TOPICAL Radio is a topical medium. Listeners tune in for the latest news, music and events. IF you can make your magic topical, you'll fit into feel of the show more easily. For example, a strong newspaper headline prediction/. |

I have done the newspaper classified reveal to great effect on radio interviews.
Other routines and bits of business I found effective include a Horoscope revelation with a caller, headline prediction, various number and other forces disguised in different routines, Elephant in Denmark, and a number of effects from Steinmeyer's booklets. There are also a great number of possibilities if the booth where the show is being broadcast from has a window looking out onto the street. A "friend" listening to the show can be put to great use in revelations or other magical hijinks. |

What if you are being interviewed over the phone (not in the studio) with this being played to a large listening audience? I know its a lot easier if you are doing stuff in the studio so it can be witnessed.
Any more suggestions?

Since Kevin popped this old thread back to the top, here is something to add.
At some time, I ran across this link: http://www.magicinspirations.net/radiomagic.htm It seems like a handy CD set to own. This thread might help with ideas: Cafe thread titled... What magic can you perform on Radio? There are quite a few threads on radio magic in the Lights...camera...action! area. Some links from those even lead to Penny for your Thoughts (mentalism) threads, etc. - Donald

Somewhere on the sticky side of my brain I recall Kenton Knepper in the Wonder Word series telling a word picture story ... with lots of verbal-visual images that help create the illusion that you actually witnessed the event (which was merely a story).
So what if you simply told an intriguing magical story. I'm sure some of the story-tellers out there would agree that a good mysterious story, told well, would go over great on the radio. Probably much better than, "Now remove the coin on the far left side of the row." Oscar |
