It just is really not needed at all in the proper performance of this fine illusion. if you know the illusion well and how to properly handle and work it then you will have no need for any books at all. Also, it relys a lot on a very good routine that is worked out to really connect with the child. This would go for any illusion using a child whether it is the Chair suspension or maybe the flying carpet. There are things you can do in your routine that will gaurentee it works smoothly every single time.

I used the chair suspension for years. I never had a problem. I tied all the kids to the board and told them they would never see their parents again if they moved. Never failed.

Early on in my performances of the Chair Suspension I had a small mishap. The girl lying on the board had her hands gripping the sides of the under-board, and when I was putting the regular board back in place her fingers got caught in between, and her fingers got pinched. No serious injury, but I felt terrible, and apologized profusely to her after the show. So what I learned the hard way:

I am sure that will prevent others from making the same mistake, Todsky. Thank you for post it.

What if you inflated a few balloons and gave them to the child to hold "to help you float"? They clasp the balloons in both hands, and you move the hands slightly back and forth "to find the right position - there we go - don't move them now." Keeps their hands on top, keeps them from moving (as much!), and could look better and be more logical than books.
Just a thought. Ed (PS - I did see one show where the performer called up a boy and a girl. He positioned the boy as the magician pointing to the suspension, and then motioned to the girl to climb up on the board. She flat refused!! So he quickly repositioned her as the magician, then whisked the boy up and laid him on the board. He had no clue what was happening!! Probably didn't even realize he was floating until he saw the photo.) |

Can someone please tell me, who is fooled by this illusion? It looks just like what it is. It almost requires no explanation to see how it's done. I haven't seen it done in person in years so do people really walk away amazed?

I used to do a chair suspension but it was without the board. I used my lady assistant and she wore a harness.
This was more convincing than the usual prop where most of the audience sees more of a balancing act than what some magicians claim to be a levitation when they sell their show.

This may be more convincing. Kind of like the old broom under the armpit trick (does that trick have a name?).

As someone who has been practicing magic for 35 years, I had my doubts about the chair suspension when I bought one in 1997. I decided to try it out on a tough audience - high schoolers. When I removed the chair and board, I looked at the front of the stage and there were 4 or 5 high school boys staring at it with their mouths open!
I'm sure there are some that are not fooled by it but, overall, the response I got with it was always very good. There is always a segment of your audience that will not be fooled by some illusions. (Again, I was using a Harbin Chair Suspension built by Sandy Rhoades and it comfortably supported an adult.) Michael P.S. The name of the illusion with the broom is, appropriately enough, the Broom Suspension. |

Funny, to me the Chair Suspension seems obvious, but when I perform it, it really does amaze most people. Of course, it helps if you sell it in a way that suggests the body is in a state of hypnotic trance, or some such pseudo-scientific mumbo jumbo like that.

I've been using the chair suspension as my "closer" for over a year now. It never fails to get a good audience response. No accidents so far - my wife always helps me out and stands by the volunteers head. She tells them to relax, and provides "moral support" during the illusion (She's also there to catch anything that might fall!). For the money, this is probably the best magic investment I've made.

Exactly. It is about learning and knowing the proper usage and handling and then creating a great presentation that works for te illusion and for your own personal style.
