This week I am scheduled for jury duty. One of the cases that might come up is one where a local "cowboy" mayor and his bodyguards took sledge hammers and demolished a rental property they believed to be a crack house. He has also been involved in many more questionable incidents, so this will be a locally high-profile case.
Do any of you have memorable stories of juries you have served on?

Well, I've been chosen for duty twice only to be dismissed before they selected jurors. I have however hoped to be selected for a jury. It's something I'd like to experience at least once.
Before you serve you should read up a bit on juror's rights (http://www.fija.org/). A lot of Judges, Lawyers, Prosecutors will tell you that the law isn't open to interpretation. That you aren't supposed to, nor allowed to use your own judgment, emotion, conscious's when making your decision as a juror. This couldn't be farther from the truth. That is the EXACT point of a jury. If you weren't supposed to analyze and interpret and make a decision for yourself based on YOUR belief and conscious then we wouldn't;t need a Jury...the Judge alone would suffice.

I don't remember it...was there a discussion on being a jury member or jurors rights?

I got called for jury duty just last month. When I arrived, I was amazed that there were so many people (over 300) called at once. They went through the standard procedures for jury duty. Then it came time to send people to be selected for various cases. They called one group of 20, and sent them off to their case to be talked about as potential jurors.
They then looked at the rest of us, and said, "The remaining 300 of you are here are prospective jurors for another case that begins in September. Actually, you're only the first half of the jury pool. The other 300 will be interviewed tomorrow. This is a big case, slated to begin in September, and will more than likely be on the news, so it's important that you don't discuss it or watch the news . . . " My first though was, "Wait a minute . . . Las Vegas, newsworthy case, large jury pool required, scheduled to start in September? Could this be the OJ Simpson robbery trial?" As it turns out, it wasn't. It's another case entirely. They had us fill out questionnaires ("Do you know any of these people? Do you work in the same field as either the defendant or prosecuting parties?" Etc.), and then told us to call back on Sept. 19th (Friday) after 6 PM to see if we were supposed to come back on Sept. 22nd. When I made the call, I learned that the questionnaire review was still going on, and I have to call back this Friday (Oct. 3rd), to see if I'm supposed to go in on Oct. 6th! I hope they have this figured by Friday. I don't want to call and hear that we're rescheduled again, and I have to call back on Oct. 17th or something! |

As it turned out, my name was called ninth from the end. All of the jury panels had sixteen members, with the exception of ours, which had eleven, so I don't see us having to return, since juries must have twelve members.

My most memorable jury duty experience was sitting on a jury in a capital murder trial. I learned a lot about myself during that trial. The accused, and later found guilty of capital murder, was a 17 year old who shot and killed one security guard and shot, but didn't kill a second security guard.
Now, I wonder if my response will cause this thread to be either locked or deleted!! Margarette
The only stupid question is the one not asked.
