I know that what I am posting is so far from an original thought, yet I feel like posting it nevertheless. And it is just my opinion. That is that what Johnny Paul had done with the combination of cups and sponge balls should be far more popular. Just my opinion, but as magical as the cups routine can be and as nice the sponge ball routine can be, the combination of the two with the proper cups is one of the best routines ever in magic.

This is one of those cases where a routine grew around the performer, I think. Johnny's routine was actually the inspiration to Al Wheatley for the chop cup.

Jonny Paul and Tommy Wonder designed a cups and balls routines done to their "measurement", to fit their own style and character, IMHO it is very hard to find a magician doing those routines as good as the originals.
I have studied and practiced the two routines, but beforehand I can tell that I am not going to present/display for real audience. ~Walid.

Wow, does that mean that Johnny's cup and sponge routine was the precursor to today's traditional chop routines?? That would impress me even more, although it wouldn't completely surprise me as one has to release a sponge ball in Johnny's routine in a very similar way as with a chop cup. No one could respect Dai Vernon or Gazzo more than me. Yet it is somewhat discouraging to watch Johnny's great routine on DVD, in that from my perspective is as equally brilliant, yet without similar accolades.

I used to use small sponge bunnies for my Chop Cup.

If you are amazed, like me, about Paul's routine, then it is something you should learn. PM me for more info.

This is a routine definately worth learning. I'm just glad Pete had the cups spun to work with the routine. Hint, if you can get 3/8 sponge balls from your local magic shop or online, you can do the routine with simliar tapered cups like the old Milt Korts or Jester cups.
I use 1" balls with Jim Riser Midi cups and can do the routine. Jake

Where on earth did you get those sponge balls Jake? Pretty unusual size.

I never liked sponge balls with the cups until I saw the Paul routine.
I liked the Johnny Paul routine so much that I was on a quest several years ago to find some cups that would work. I traded a set of DD/PF Copper Cups for a set of National Magic Water Cups so that I could work on the routine! When Pete came out with the Paul cups I purchased them right away. I've had my Water Cups (short skirt, hallmarked) for sale here on the Café, but it appears I am either over-pricing them or there is no one interested in them at this time! If you haven't seen the thread you might want to check it out. I think my third post in the thread should win a Pulitzer Prize! http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=76 I'm going elewhere with them tomorrow. Terry

I belive some times we need to feed our creativity, since we got used to so much using the same old props, I would never have thought to buy sponge balls of that size, but already waiting for them, and now I am forced to do something with them.
thanks for your generosity Jake. ~Walid.

It's tricky finding cups with the proper dimensions to make that (JP) routine work. I've found some that "almost worked" more times than I can count, but ultimately I had to scrap 'em.
I recently bought a set of JP cups from Bob on ebay, and I cannot WAIT to see how the original cups feel and work for this routine!
