For those who eat them... I have a question.
I actually like them. But the chocolate drizzled birthday cake flavored ones with chocolate chips and sprinkles and brown sugar... It's too much for me. It's like, for me, the more that is on/in them the more they taste like cardboard. Just wondered what everyone else thought.

Yes, I think cardboard pretty accurately describes the taste.

Actually, to get serious for a moment....
My wife buys rice cakes from health food stores, and the cakes are made from brown rice. This gives them a LOT of extra flavor. I don't particularly like the flavor, but they don't taste like cardboard. |

Some are ok, but I'm not a fan. I think the ones you mention can be worse than plain because they add things like low/no sugar "chocolate" to make them seem more appealing and keep it a "healthy" snack, but I'm no fan of those either. When you add one thing that doesn't taste good to another thing that doesn't taste that great to begin with.... It's kind of that "two wrongs don't make a right" thing.

I only bought them once a long time ago, when they first came out and I only had the plain and never had them again. I have always created my own diets to have low cal foods.

REAL rice cakes are made of thoroughly pulverised rice mixed with just enough water to make a thick paste, which is then shaped into cakes and grilled on an hibachi or wood-fired heater until slightly scorched on the outside and pleasantly chewy on the inside. Served with warm soy sauce and honey, real rice cakes are delicious. |

Leland, where do you get those rice cakes?

I'd like to try the real ones too! (I can't believe the bad ones are still being sold actually.)

Locals, try here:
http://www.fugetsu-do.com/ Or, if you have a Japanese grocery store nearby, ask for "mochi." They are best enjoyed while seated on tatami, sipping tea and viewing the first full moon of autumn. |

WOW! BROWN rice cakes??? I've never even heard of those.
Hahaha. I guess no one here much likes them, then... DANG.... Mochi sounds pretty nifty! A buddy and I saw mochi on Wii's Cooking Mama Cooking Contest and we had no idea what it was all about. If it's eaten with something like honey, though... Watch out... This bear cub loves honey.
