I'm going to build my own website for the bicycle tours and am thinking about using Geocities.
Is that a good choice or should I explore another option? Help me out and you get free tours! |

Geocities can have a canned look to it. I would recommend that you download Macromedia Dreamweaver. It's an $800 program, however, you do get a 30 day, full access demo.
So as long as it doesn't take you 31 days, you can build a KILLER website. |

Can a complete idiot like me handle that? What about the hosting? Geocities also hosts.

There are several methods of using Dreamweaver. They have numerous templates, where you just enter the text you want and insert the pictures. They have default backgrounds for different themes, which you can easily change.
There is a lot in there, so it is easy to be overwhelmed, but if you take it step by step, it is user-friendly. Doesn't matter that Geocities is hosting. You can upload files from the Geocities site to your directory. Dreamweaver even has a built in feature that will do that for you after you make the pages. If you can produce 10 silver dollars, one handed, you can do this. |

That's pretty much where my experience goes, about 11 years ago. I tinkered with it a little, but my experience with many built-in builders, new and old, leads me to believe that Dreamweaver is the best route.

All I want is something short and sweet. I want to load it with photos and video clips. I will also want to add a shopping cart but that'll be down the road.

Short and sweet, Geocities might be your best bet then. The easiest way of doing a shopping cart would probably be through PayPal. I'm not sure if they allow on-the-fly editing where you can just paste code in though (which you would have to do if you put it in later).

I use sitebuilder for my site. It's nothing extravagant but it gets the job done. It's very easy to use after you sit down with it for an hour or so. Let me know if you need a hand.

I used Geocities years ago for my first site, and I had several problems with them. Occasionally after building or updating, the info wouldn't go through and had to totally be redone. They got hacked a couple different times; one time, anyone who went to my site was immediately redirected to a porn site. The last time it was hacked, my password was changed. My old site is still up, I can't log in to take it down, and talking with them did nothing.
Again, this was years ago. If you try it, I hope things have changed. Good luck. P.S. I think any beginner course on HTML would give you a site that looks just as good with no advertisements or hassle. Heck, watching the free videos on HTML on the Video Professor site would do this! After learning the basic concepts, I built a practice site almost exactly like my old one in a day.

Thanks guys.
Michael, what do you mean "No advertisements..." Do they put ads on the site? |

Yes, they have "Sponsored Links" along the right side of your site. It takes up about a fifth of each page. Of course, this was with a free account. If you pay, it might not be there.

If you pay it's not there. Site Builder also updates regularly and is pretty good security wise.

Oh, okay. I plan on paying to get the unlimited band with.
What do you mean "site builder"? Is that something else? Where do I find it, I'll look into it. |

You already have a website with justinstylemagic.com A lot of web space providers let you point multiple domains to the same site, so you could host your bicycling site on the same server, and only pay for the domain (which cost something like $5 a year). It wouldn't interfere with your magic site in the least.
