I went in Michaels craft store today to get some supplies for a Fall Festival show, and found that they were selling the foam-molded craft pumpkins at 50% off. These things go for an outrageous price online, as much as $40 each. I picked up four different sizes for $20 ! They had some of the big orange ones left, and lots of the big white ones. They told me business is WAY off this year, so they are discounting them.
I thought I would let y'all know they can be had for way less than normal this year, in case anyone is looking for them. I use one to produce one of my puppets during my Halloween shows.

Mark,
Those pumpkins are great for zombies too. I used the Losander dvd for insight and hooked up one of the Micheals pumpkins to float out of a large halloween goodie bag. |

I'll second that .
I've had a "zombie" pumpkin for years. I actually had written to Tommy Wonder about it around 1998 , getting his permission to use his levitation system (modified zombie) for my floating pumpkin idea and Tommy was kind enough to custom make the gimmick for me (for a very reasonable price). Mine uses a large pumpkin , but of course a smaller "funkin" can be used like a standard zombie ball. Gene Poinc has a routine for a small jack o' lantern a la zombie . It's still on the Poinc archives at The Learned Pig Project last time I looked. |

Tom Yurastis, creator of Confusing Crayons, sells a Pumpkin Zombie that has flashing electric eyes. It looks cool, and the kids love it. I don't own one, but saw someone use one once. The kids ate it up.
Nice to here some positive comments on Zombie. I had to leave a discussion about this effect in another section of this forum, as someone was on a flame war about awful the effct is and that no one should perform it anymore... Mark

My "Visit to the Boneyard" makes use of the lightweight foam skulls available in craft stores and Dollar Stores this year, and one of the effects is the venerable Zombie, but with some new twists and turns. I believe the foam pumpkins could also be used nicely for the effects, even if they aren't made of bones... it's still a Halloween theme. I include some solutions for the "objectionable" flaws of the usual Zombie routine (i.e. Most routines violate the second rule of magic simply by going on too long). One solution is to shorten the routine, but I take the other route and change the method of operation several times.

Owln1...I do indeed LOVE performing Zombie. I did it at a show yesterday morning, and it went over like free gasoline! I plan to do it on 11 shows next week. I am only using the standard silver metal ball, but launch it from an old haunted house I built myself.
As Spellbinder so accurately pointed out, the length can either kill or crown the effect. I do a very short routine, and it always leaves my young audiences wanting more. Next Halloween, I plan to make a Zombie from one of the little foam pumpkins to change things up. Mark

Saw the foam pumpkins in Michaels again today.
Although originally between $11 and $20.00, now they are reduced to $3.59 each! Get 'em soon, as they told me at the store here they will be putting them away in another week or so... Mark
