After researching the Blog versus Website debate, I have decided to start a blog.
Perhaps some of you experienced bloggers could help me. Has anybody come across any good sites or blogs that would help me get started. I'm looking for info on a good free blogging service and any good articles etc. on running one I have tried googling but the results are mind boggling Any help will be greatly appreciated :) |

Do other mentalists have blogs? I have not seen any. Of course I have not been looking either.

Personally I recommend Wordpress with your own hosting. But it it has to be free... then it would be wise to go with a reliable service with little chance of closing down. Blogger or Wordpress.com (free).
I used to enjoy the short lived Ford Kross blog. Eruptions or whatever it was called.

I have one through blogger, http://psychiclife.blogspot.com/
It isn't mentalism and it needs to be updated, but it is there. Tony |

I say do not use the free blogging services. I have had many people I am aquainted with had theirs shut down for no valid reason at all. ( When your hosted on a free site, they don't need a valid reason.
But Wordpress is free ( the blogging program itself) there are numerous free plug ins to help you with your blog and you can get hosting for a somg at many many hosting services nowadays. Be safe, you wouldn't want to spend a lot of time and effort into producing a decemt blog only to be shut down unexpectedly for no reason. |

Is having a blog really worth it from a professional standpoint? Surely you want to present more sales oriented information to customers to pitch for gigs, which is best served by a more static web presence? What exactly would you need the site to do, what is the content going to be, and who do you intend to read it?

I think the problem with a blog is what cayce is hinting at? I picture a "mentalism" blog that hasnt been updated in 3 months. Most people will quickly stop looking at your blog if you don't have constant updates. Without "pitching" it towards other magicians/mentalists its going to be hard to have the content to keep up with it.
Just my thoughts. Nate |

I have a blog too - it has worked wonders in terms of getting more visits to the site and more bookings. My blog for the public is http://mindofkennedy.blogspot.com and for fellow mentalists at http://mentalistblog.blogspot.com/ they both operate through blogger which is free and very flexible. Another great blogging service is Wordpress.

Kens blog does a good job of showing potential bookers that he is a busy performer, which I guess would give them the confidence to make the booking. In tandem with a good sales site, I think that would be the kind of thing you would have to do. Without a supporting site more directly pitching your services, I think you would have problems making it generate bookings.
I don't like using free services though, if they go wrong, you can't phone up and give em hell! "What am I paying you guys for? oh, that's right, nothing." You should at least use paid hosting. |
