I used to never leave home without a few coins, my wedding ring and a few sponge balls and a laccy band or two - these can keep kids entertained for hours!
Unfortunately divorce means I no longer have the wedding ring...and precious little coins!!! |

Good topic. I love to work with whatever I have around me. I love torn and restored paper napkins and napkins over the head. also, a thumb tip and salt is a great pocket trick which you can make look bigger if you want.

-coins. I have a full one-coin routine designed for kids based on Silly Billy's principles. It involves misnaming, look-don't see, magician in trouble and empowering kids to do magic. It's loosely based on David Stone's one-coin rotine.
-taking off fingers and thumbs. -making a coin, or anything else disappear and fall out of you nose. -cards from mouth

I routinely carry two half dollars and one English penny. Also a metal thimble. When I have a few minutes with little to do I practice with them to keep in shape. They also allow me to perform impromptu when the situation calls for it.
In the car I keep a small pouch of props in case I need to do more of a show at the last minute. My favourite is to follow the coin routines (using the coins I always carry) with the Hopping Half. |

My wife who taught 2nd grade was put on the spot when a professional magician did not show up. I did sponge balls with wadded up paper. crazy mans handcuffs with rubber bands and the kids own hair ties, cut and restored string, and penetrating straws ... closing with some coin magic. Saved her school some money (no, I couldn't take it from my wife) & had a blast.

Only new to the game but I pulled a coin from behind a five year old's ear yesterday then made it disappear. She loved it. I was thrilled that she followed my misdirection!

Walk up a set of stairs w/o a head... walk down the hallway and shrink... Vanishing pinky... shrinking pinky...squashed head with paper bag...shoelace thru pinky...
There is just so much man, so much impromptu magic!!!! oh yeah...coin from ear, kids love this one, I always enjoy putting it back in their ears just so I can see them later, banging on the sides of their heads trying to get the coin back out, I love it! |

One of my favorite comedy effects is making my voice "disappear." In a serious tone, I say: "Watch!" Then my hand pantomimes grabbing something in front of my mouth. With my mouth closed, I raise the closed fist and then slowly open it as if something has vanished. Then I mouth the words "Did you see it disappear?" Pause. Mouth soundlessly: "I'll bring it back." Then I pantomime grabbing something in the air, open my mouth, and toss my "voice back into it. The kids realize it's silly--like making a forefinger jump from one hand to the other. But it gets a good laugh. And it's fun to watch the kids when they try to imitate the "stunt."

In The Magic Book, Harry Lorayne calls it "Everything Goes."
You borrow a coin (or similar) and use a pen/pencil as a magic wand. They expect the coin to vanish but instead the wand vanishes !! It always gets them. Following on, you then vanish the coin and finally the wand. |

Interesting; Andini1 must have read a different book! There is no coin used in my write up in The Magic Book. But it's still a heck of a quick routine... HL.

Sorry Harry - I was forgetting your bit with the paper and colour.
Sometimes I use a coin. Anyway, it's a great book full of impromptu stuff. |

I thought it was too dumb to ever use but then I tried it on some kids and they loved it. Plus with thumb and finger magic they never say "let me try" like they do if you do sponge ball or coin magic. Of course coin magic is a must as well. Just be ready to give up your coin because they will be asking to try whatever you did and will want to get a hold of your coin. So I just give out the quarter or nickle and let them have at it. If they want to see more I just tell them I need the coin back.

I do magic for kids in a hospital twice a month and the most popular item is the "Squeaker".
I'll touch a youngster's knee and it will squeak and I'll jump back surprised and say "Did you show the doctor that your knee squeaks?" And then I'll look curiously at the boy or girl's ear and pull out a quarter, again looking confused. Then, depending on the child's mood and how ill the child is I may stop or go on. |
