Hey, all. I'm looking for a good table with a working surface that you could theoretically perform close-up or card magic on top of. I really like the Viking Table design, although it's very pricey and seems to be largely unavailable. I also like the Joe Lefler table, but it looks like there's a handle on the top that would get in the way of a working surface.
Any ideas? Insights? |

Take a look at the Tabman tables and the ones from Ambitious Card.

Well, I really like the design of tables like the Viking and the Lefler because I use fair number of props and hankies, and zombie balls, etc., and it would be nice to have a table with a working surface that I could also store all that stuff in.
Does the Lefler come with a working surface? |

The handle of the Lefler table is not in the top when the table is set up. It's actually at the front. The top section hinges forward, and there are some supports that hold that section. I don't know how level it is, or how well-suited it is to close-up work, though.
It is 18 inches by 14 inches, and it is covered in black polyolefin, which is basically like indoor-outdoor carpeting. You can get an idea of how it looks here: http://www.ronjo.com/magic/leflertable.html My chief objection would be this. It's not really suitable to work behind. That solid bottom section would be a source of interference for your feet and lower legs. When you work on stage with a table, you obviously won't be working behind it, but with close-up magic, that's a different situation. Tables that are good for one purpose are seldom good for the other. For example, this would not be the ideal tradeshow table. It's too low. When I worked trade shows, I had a company build a special trade show stand for me. Figure out what kind of show you want a table for, and buy the right table for it. You will be glad you did.

Chris, did you make a case to go with it?

Hi again James,
no case James. I got the idea from "Mark Wilsons Cyclopedia of Magic", that's the small pocket size volume. In the back there are drawings and instructions on a very nice Magic Table, its just a variation of that, slightly larger that's all. Chris

That is a sweet looking table. Wow! See, I don't understand why someone doesn't make tables like that? There must be at least some demand for it.
Kudos to you, Chris! |

Thanks Marcel.
If I lived in the States perhaps I could set up shop making them, but it was really easy to make. O.k, it has not got that "Mikame" type finish, but it does the job just fine. James, the art work is a bit of "clipart" that I took to a printer, who in turn blew it up and made a vinyl sticker which I applied to the table. Chris
