Firstly I apologise if this is not the right place to post this.....I AM new here:)
Does anyone have a "Slush Powder" routine they would like to share?? I have tired of the old "Which cup is the water in" routine, and my imagination seems to have backed up as of late!! Any help or suggestions will be gratefully received. Regards Chris

I used this for a series of preschool shows this past spring, all of which had an Earth Day theme. I tied in how it is getting harder for big cities to find good sources of clean, fresh water, not the stuff that is full of chlorine from the water treatment plant, but natural, clean water. In other words, clean water is disappearing, just like the water in the cup did (the cup with the slush powder, that is). The kids thought it was cool, and it did create some amazed faces, even on the teachers.
I should add that the other day, I did an audition for a library system, and one of the presenters was a "science" program person. Her program consisted of exposing both slush powder and snow powder, complete with info on how to order it in large quantities from online science vendors. From what I hear, this is becoming very common. At an indoor playground I performed at last Christmas, the owner ordered a bunch of snow powder and activated it on a large vinyl tarp for the kids to play in. It was a big deal for them, since we don't get snow in Florida. The owner of the facility was showing off the package the stuff came in to all the moms, telling them how to order it. Bottom line, if you create a great presentation, you may be able to pull off effects using the chemicals. However, they are no longer being used strictly by magicians. This could make things difficult if you are performing for older kids, especially ones who have been to "science" shows. Anyone remember who it was that said "today's magic is tomorrow's science" ? :) Mark

Hmmm, I might have misquoted.
Perhaps it was "Today's magic is tomorrow's technology" ? Mark

Mark,
thanks for your response and ideas. For the past year here in Cyprus, we have a water shortage, so there must be a "hook" there somewhere? I already use the fact we have a water shortage in my "Funnel" routine. I go on about recycling water etc, and how I have found a way to do this with the water we drink! Anyway, perhaps I can combine the two somehow?? Thanks again Mark. Chris

I uses a simple routine, and I forgot whom I got it from - a lecturer at our club meeting. Tell the audience that you are going to explain the defination of an illusion. Pour the water from one cup to the other. Ask "how many saw the water?" Then "how many heard the water?" Then, "how many saw AND heard the water?". Well, that was just an illusion. Then turn both cups upside down for three or four seconds, the turn the tops of the cups to the audience as you move your arms back and forth (crossing them).
Sounds simple, but this is very effective. Jim |

...if this had happened to me, I'd have pointed out that slush powder and snow powder are unsuitable for children to play with. Both products are bad for the skin, and should not be ingested. Allowing kids to play in a heap of the stuff is pretty irresponsible, in my opinion. ;) |

In stage I use the Amazing Jonhatan sequence of put in my ear and spit with my mouth, but ONLY IN STAGE in certain ocassions, I use it too in a mirror goblet to tranform the liquid in a silk!

Hi Hansel,
can you elaborate a little? I don't understand putting Slush Powder in your ear and spitting it out of your mouth??? Chris

Doug....
I agree with you completely. I did point out to the indoor playground owner that raw chemicals like slush or snow powder should not be ingested by anyone, much less young children. However, she pointed to the package she had purchased, and showed me a label that stated it was safe for children ! Wonder why it doesn't say that on any of the packages I have purchased at magic shops ? The science presenter I spoke of in an earlier post told a "funny" story about a company in Nevada that provides snow powder as a way to make snow in the summer. They dumped powder on the front lawn of a family for a little girl's birthday, then watered it to make snow. The children played in it for hours. After the party, they cleaned up the mess, or so they thought. Now everytime it rains, the family has a snow covered front yard. Wonder how long that will go on, and I also wonder what it is doing to the soil underneath ? Mark

Hi Chris,
I think this is the performance of the Amazing Jonathan that Hansel was referring to. http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=Npn1Akrxmn0 Adam
