I believe that many of our likes and dislikes are based on the skill and presentation of the performer that we have originally seen do the illusion. In the end, we need to listen more to what our audiences enjoy rather than what we enjoy. Wise words Chris. I think perhaps a few of the illusions I dislike could be improved with different presentations. And you're absolutely right to point out that we need to be better at understanding audience perspectives. A kids birthday party audience will want different things and look at a show in a different way to, say, a cabaret audience, who will in turn be different to a ren faire audience. Which is not to say that kids are less demanding or will not spot a method in a poorly performed trick - its just that different audiences want different things from a show. Perhaps the key word is "show" - it seems to me that what audiences want most of all is a show, not just a performance of magic but entertainment. That's a big difference. A poor performer can take a brilliantly designed illusion and still do a gig that leaves the audience bored and unconvinced, a good performer can take a weak illusion and leave an audience gasing or rolling in the aisles (for instance the late great Tommy Cooper).
