I gotcha, Kyle. It is too much of a headache with me too. To be honest, it is more like a job.

I have rough totals for everything combined but have not really sat down to tabulate the whole collection of stuff I own. The illusions alone would rack up the price as it is. I mean 4 illusions I own as is would be around 4k easily. The cool part is that my magic has paid for itself. A part of the money I make from magic goes back into the show and items I need. Everything in the show is paid for by the magic. It has worked great for us over he years. We track everything and then can determine when funds are available for something we may need.

Kyle, that's pretty much how I work too. My fees are quite a bit higher than the average in my area, but I invest about 15% of my gross income in new props and kit. That's several thousand pounds a year. The money invested is all tax-free, and I see it as "surplus" to the wages I'd earn if I wasn't offering a high-end show.

Exactly. That is how I have been doing it for years and it works very well for my wife and I. In this manner the magic pays for the magic. I do not have to tap into other funds for things I need. The magic sustains itself. I just have to keep good records and track everything. But I already have those systems in place and so that is second nature to me now.

For my birthday show I bring around $3,000 worth of stuff. This includes sound system and tables.
My other shows vary but for most of my daycare programs I have invested $500-1000 worth of equipment. I use the same sound equipment and tables that I do for bdays so the total would be around 2,500 - 3,000. Until recently I was investing 33% into props around the same for marketing and one third for me. I have since increased what I take and lowered the others a bit. |

It would oost me another lifetime to replace all my props. I have been performing for the past 30 years now and surviving solely with magic.

Isn't it amazing just how much magic you accumulate over the years? I mean even if you tried hard to only buy what you need, it still is staggering.

It's all a question of how much you want/need to take out of your earnings for yourself, mortgages, etc, and how much you re-invest to build your business. We all know our work is a labour of love. I'd be kiding myself if I didn't admit that I WANT to buy new tricks and props, because they're so much fun! ;) |

It was all about goal setting. I had a place where I wanted to get and as such needed to make sacrifices. I personally suggest a similar approach for anyone that wants to be able to "make it" in this business relatively quickly, took me just over 2 years. Invest as much time, money, and energy as you possibly can. I’m now at a point where I have bookings coming in nearly every day and enough money to live 100% off of this profession. It was an expedited process due to my strict percentages and amount of effort put forward.
Back on task- I personally believe that clients like to see things that they aren’t expecting -more so in kids shows- and spending a lot of money on unusual props is never a bad thing |

In regards to the price to replace my props...I don't know...But I do know that once I'm that to perform my show, I never leave my lefler table. If I walk away the table is always closed and in my site.

I'm am not normal by any definition. My shows are not normal. I typically do not perform in peoples houses, because my show is too large to move. I am not a "pack small, play big" performer. I am a "Pack big, play bigger" performer and I have invested many years and dollars to provide the finest props, and show material I can afford.
To replace my props and equipment for my shows would cost over $35k. Remote control animated Toucan deluxe programmable with all upgrades $6k Professional High Definition Video Camera Panasonc HVX-200 $6k High Definiton Video Projector $2.5k Wolf Props used in show +$3k Sound system $3k DMX lights and PC and software to run it all is $15k Non-wolf props and other show materials is around $2k Good thing I have insurance! |

On the face of it, probably about $400, and $250 of that was in the [I have since found out the name of it] "In a Flash Appearance" box for the bunny.
But several of the props, especially that box which was the essential part of every version of my show, either aren't made anymore or I forgot where to get 'em. It would be a great loss to me if suddenly my props were not only gone, but irreplaceable. |

Well,
All I can say is "Stuff me with the thick end of a Xmas Tree.." Some of these responses have been jaw-dropping. A kids show? Costing in the region of 35 BIG ONES? I'm astonished. Speechless, in fact.. :)

It's a business! Here's some pics I took of my home office some time ago. There is so much more you cannot see. I should set everything up if I can in 1 pic someday.

Seriously, if you have $35K USD to invest, I can turn that into between $80k-$440k USD a year and make you a local celebrity. It's a new unique business that America is ready for. I'm crossing Hollywood with Vegas and making the birthday child the star!!! Limited franchise opportunities available for a stand alone, no fee business opportunity in your area. I'd like to see a group of us from the Café sweep the nation and put quality magic entertainment back in the theater, but merged with todays computers and animatronics.
Chuck E Cheese execs are already holding meetings to figure out how they can compete! Besides, Didn't Copperfield lose his entire show when he tried to return from Russia? How much did that cost him?? 5 million? And his insurance didn't even pay him!! |
