I recently found out that I have a coin shop about a mile away from my house, and I plan on heading out there.
But which coins should I get? I am looking for the softest/quietest coins. Primarily because I will be using them for 3Fly and Long Gone Silver - both require very soft coins. Right now I use JFK half's, but I find them too loud.

I would say barbers are the softest commonly found silver half dollars...
You can go to an average coin shop and get a handfull that match in wear and patina... If you want to go with doallr sized.. Go with Morgan dollars... These are harder to find in the soft coins... not impossible but you will have to do more hunting... I find it difficult to find a set of Morgans with similar wear and patina. They are out there though... If you want you could find old morgans with similar wear (not patina).. and clean them up... After that point you will have a clean set of old dollars.. After handeling for a year or so though the silver begins to darken again.. (never to the point of a true patina from 100 of years of handeling... but good enough) Good luck

As far as patina I've been doing some research and it is sulfur's interaction with the silver in the coin that darkens the coins up nicely ... So knowing this storing your coins in a sulfur rich environment will look the same as 100 years of sulfur in the air interacting with the coins ... hope this helps ... This applies to silver coins, not sure of the rest ... please use responsibly

Hey Izz...
I've messed around with all of it.. Sulfur, Bleach, hardboiled eggs... ashes. Nothing creates a patina like 100 years of handeling... Nothing that I can see. Good luck if you wish to try it, I wish you sucess. I've ruin far to many coins and spent far to much money messing with it myself. Copper coins you can age yourself... Brass coins yu can age yourself... Silver, just buy old silver coins and try to get the best match you can. Shawn

Shawn,
I can asure you that bleach works pretty well, and it comes to (Darkening) a silver dollar coin,a morgan one in my case. I gree that it is not exactly the same as a 100 years coin, but good enough to my mind. But that is just very much for the darkening. When I got injured a few months ago,i put my coins away, and I left 12 coins on the windowsil and I added something on each coin on both side of each one,i am not gonna mention the name of the stuff I put on them right now because it is still an experiment,i have been planning to do that for a long time but because I was always using those 12 coins I could not do it,but I was planning to buy more of those morgan to give it a try,i knew in order to see result from the experiment the coins must be with the stuff on for weeks,i do not know how many but possibly past 4 weeks, anyway but getting injured I managed to do that,(everything works out for good):),well I hope so,i check them out last night and they are doing fine so far. I will let you know if it works. Peace. |

Yeah ShawnB been messing with it too and I think you are right ... but never say die lol I will continue to experiment ... there is great stuff and new looks with sulfur but it isn't the same and bleach is even harder to control the end result but to each there own
I reread this post and maybe my Morgans aren't solf ... how can I know? |
