In another thread someone mentioned reading Herodotus in the tub. I'm working through the Works of Archimedes. My 10th grade daughter is reading Sophocles' Antigone in her English class. Suddenly it occurs to me that two millennia later, the Greeks are still everywhere.
Is this just my quirky little world? Or do you have favourite dead Greeks? John

My Uncle Chris. He brought fantastic cooking into the family and a great laugh.
Good natured and with striking good looks he was a pivitol character in my growing up. I could see him on a coin...(but not a tunic.) While a dabble in Socrates, I read more of the Romans and most of that just research for some characters in my ancient coin collection. Of course Shakespear filled in some blanks with Coriolanus & Julius Caesar. Not having a formal education, I was not assigned any Greeks.

My absolute favorite Greek is the guy at the local gyros place: I'm a good and regular customer, and he gives me extra large portions and is always happy to see me when I come in the door.
But he's not dead. May he LIVE FOREVER! And me too! And you, John...and Doug...and all of you here at the Café, except those I hate, of which there is only one...and may he live a very, very long life. Just not forever. But enough of that. John, those ancient Greeks aren't dead. They have achieved immortality. I love ALL of them, as you might have guessed. I am basically (I've said this before, but maybe not in the not so magical forum) Aristotelian when it comes to religious belief. I'm an Aristotelian Taoist, actually, and I'm not kidding. Yes, I made the religion up, but I still believe in it...with a little Virgil thrown in to emphasize piety. If forced to live on a desert island, I'd be satisfied with the Loeb Classical Library. (If any of you fabulously wealthy Café members are wondering, "What could I surprise Jeff with for Christmas, you could give me a shrunken head from Doug and the Loeb Classical Library. But in that order. Actually, you can forget the books. I've read most of that stuff anyway.) Let's see: where was I? I'm verbose tonight, for some reason. It's because I haven't had enough beer. I'm generally a VERY talkative person, but I also generally post at night after a few beers. Anyway, in order of who I grab for sheer pleasure, rather than instruction: Herodotus Plutarch Plato Aristotle Thucydides Aristophanes Euripides The rest I only read in fits and starts. In terms of instruction rather than pleasure, you can put the philosophers at the top. For the record, I've never read Archimedes. (Christmas hint!) |

Never criticize someone else until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Then, when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away from them and you will have their shoes.

Well considering what I do and that I'm quarter Greek, yeah, quite a few of them.

Socrates too. Although we only know of him through Plato, I feel I can read between the lines...
