I have been working on this for three years now. This is the best updated and most recent version of it. I need opinions on it.
Jeremy Gates 2008 duel double Bullet catch. Routine- The magicians walks out on stage. Explain that they will shoot at each other in a duel with revolvers. Then catch the bullets in their hands just like superman. Then say although we make it look possible there is a trick to it and it can go wrong! So don’t try this dangerous stunt! Unless you know the secret and are crazy like us. They bring out the two revolvers witch consist of trigger locks so they are not fire until the magicians are ready. Then two spectators are chosen at random. Then two sharpie markers are brought out each a different color. One is handed to each volunteer, each volunteer color’s the bullet and shell. The bullet with a small dot on the tip. This is done by both volunteers with their cartridges. The volunteers are told to load the revolvers with cartridges. The revolvers are handed back to the magicians. They take the locks off the triggers with the keys and place the locks in their pockets. Shake hands in good sport. Then turn around and proceed toward their places. Two big glass frames are brought out. They are in front of line of fire one in front of each magician. The magicians take their shirts off so you know there are no bullet proof vests on them. Two cameras zoom in on the glass frames so audience can see glass shatter as the bullet goes through it. Two more cameras (high speed) zoom in on magicians so audience can see them catch the bullets. The audience is told to count down from ten to one. The magicians fire after one. The bullets go through the glass shattering it on it’s way. That way audience is sure bullets are traveling through air. After that the magicians stagger back possibly bleeding but never the less caught bullet alive and well. Then magicians hold their bullets between their fingers. Cameras zoom in to show them crushing the bullets. As a finally they bring the revolvers to each of the audience members who signed the shells and tell them to remove the shells. They find the shells to of switched places and are in each others revolver. Then crushed bullets and shells are given back to volunteers as souvineers.

It sounds an awful lot like Penn & Teller's Magic Bullet to me. If you found a method for this, I congratulate you, and if you have the chutzpah to do this, I applaud you. I don't think I could do a bullet catch. The effect does play very well though.

I recently took 2nd place in our club's "stage competition" using an empty squirt gun,an empty water glass, and a gimmick that I invented myself. It was a comedy bit & went over great, I start out talking, obviously nothing in my mouth but my tongue, then, a bit later, I spit a mouthful of water into the glass. Everybody roared!

Bullet catches are easy. You want to impress your audience catch an arrow shot from a bow at 30 feet right at you. Now that is impressive. By the way I have never seen it done except in the movies with trick photography. Do it live and you really have a real reputation maker.
If I were to agree with you. Then we would both be wrong. As of Apr 5, 2015 10:26 pm I have 880 posts. Used to have over 1,000

Whoever said this is too close to Penn & Teller's routine is exactly right. No way two guns shooting at each other will look like anything other than plagerism. In history I believe they are the only one's to ever do the two guns shooting at each other, doing this routine isn't going to help you.

A bullet catch is a heck of a lot easier then what people make it out to be. It looks suspenseful and live threatening to the audience, but it should be nothing short of a walk in the park for an experienced magician. Even an amateur could perform this with good results.
Your routine does sound like Penn and Teller's, by the way. Maybe the method is different, and if it is, use it.

My method would be totally different I guess I was so focused on that I forgot that other than the bullets switching places and the bullet catch being real it would be exactly the same to the audience. Although by the time I do it Penn and Teller's version might be old and I could bring it back retro with a new twist or ask their permission to do it letting them twik it to be more Penn and Tellerish so as not to give them a bad rap. I don't know all I know is it would be wicked to do not necessarily because of the routine or effect but the fact that it is real and the bullets switch in the end. A real kicker!
Posted: May 7, 2010 11:36am Perhaps I didn't emphasize it enough the bullets really travel. Though only at a low speed like the cannonball catch. Proved by high speed live cameras, I know I sound like a idiot Criss Angel stunt man for this but I am not even sure that it could be done. Even if I got the math right after much testing with bullistics gell and things. I don't know if I should do it because with my wanting to be a Christian magician it could send the wrong message even if I do explain that it is scientifically safe and symbolizes all things through Christ and satain cant hurt me. A while back I did come up with a proper way to present it but forgot what it was. If nothing else I could just do it for small selected audience of educated people that won't be missled by it.

I worked an act over twenty years ago that closed with the Bullet Catch. BORING for the set-up (unless you are Penn and Teller), but a stupifying effect. As a Standalone Feat, you can pull in some awesome fees. But, the version I see above has some flaws that keep it from being a FEAT.
All other issues aside - and there ARE issues - I do not understand the part about smashing the bullets with your fingers. It leaves me cold. For one thing, aren't bullets made of lead> I did not know they could be crushed. But, I still have not gotten to the point... It seems very poor to crush the "deadly" projectiles. Like, doing an effect with a fake sledge hammer, then showing that it's made of sponge. NEVER would I let the deadly items that ONLY an Invincible Magician can stop with his teeth - be simply crushed by fingertips. A real bullet can't be. But, that nonwithstanding, it's no big deal if you can catch something with your teeth, only to squash it with your fingers. I keep thinking I mis-read that. But, I've gone back to reread it a few times. Everything "Magician" in me reads in disbelief. Hopefully, I misunderstood. By the way, you can run a continuous mark all along the bullet and shell. They will match well enough after the shot has been fired. Also, do the Bullets change places> Wait. I think that the effect is: Amazing magician survives having a pistil fired directly at his face. He catches the bullet in his teeth. But, if the bullets change places, then the effect screams "sleight-of-hand". It muddies the water. A Bullet caught is the effect. EVERYTHING else should be mundane and realistic, in my view. We are training the audience what to think. I can't help but think that if the effect is the impossible feat of stopping a bullet with your teeth, just as the audience is going where you were taking them, suddenly, you say, "look, the chosen card!" Don't mind me ... when I did mentalism, I played it for psychic phenomena. I never stopped a show, either, to say "I am going to pretend to make a woman float". A surprise effect after other effects is a wonderful thing. The audience thinks that all these surprises are fantastic ... then, there's one more! But, we have to watch that we don't undo the illusions that are paramount for the main effect to work. And, with all due respect, playing the scene for realism is key. Last note - did you just "punk" me> |

BTW, when it comes to bullet catches, the simpler the better.

Despite what everyone says and realizing the dangers my routine mainly method is simply to good for me to let it go. This version is different from my original using cartriges. It is more traditional. One day I will have the money to do tests with bullistics gell and everything. Then I will probably realize the dangers. I love the idea of it though. I might just publish the workings and let another fool do it. This is my second version I came up with in 07.
The magician walks out on stage. Explains that he will catch a bullet in his hands just like superman. Then says although I make it look possible there is a trick to it and it can go wrong! So don’t try this dangerous stunt! Unless you know the secret and are crazy like me. Then six army men march on stage in formation. Followed by a man with six rifles along with ammunition, powder, and wadding. Hands all six rifles out one for each army man. A box of one bullet is handed to audience for examination. The bullet is retrieved back. A spectator is chosen at random. Then a sharpie marker is brought out. He or she color’s the bullet with a small dot. The volunteer comes up on stage. Is told to load all six riffles with powder from powder bag and only one with the bullet. The firing squad has their backs turned that way no one knows who has the lethal shot. The rifles are handed back to soldiers. They line up in formation. A big glass frame is brought out. It is in front of line of fire. The magician takes his place. Takes his shirt off so you know there is no bullet proof vest on him. One camera zooms in on the glass frame so audience can see glass shatter as the bullet goes through it. Another camera (high speed) zooms in on magician so audience can see him catch it. On the magicians mark the rifles are fired. The bullet goes through the glass shattering it on it’s way. That way audience is sure bullet is traveling through air. After that the magician then staggers back possibly bleeding but never the less caught bullet alive and well. Then magician holds bullet between fingers. Camera zooms in to show him crushing it. Then it is handed out to someone in audience as souvenir. This is the same baisic priciple in the other version. Less of a copy and I realized in the end I end up with a confederate containing a duplicate of the one I have. This could be used in counless ways to make mine transpose. P.S. The staggaring and bleeding is fake. Any thoughts?

I just read paulapaul and Bill Palmers replies. I shall look into Banachek's version. Also the bullet in my hands. I have changed that version a bit though. Given their are two magicians doing it it would be odd for one magician to crush a bullet rather than both. Both would also be odd though so I realized that is only for my solo version. Which regarding the crushing in case I didn't make it clear enough. The bullet is crushed to show my invinsability. (I am so tough I can not only catch but crush them.) Perhaps I could emphasize that before it is done. To emphasize a solid bullet thogh I then hand it out to the audience for inspection. Perhaps I could even do it before I crush it.

Had a thought and my crushing of the bullet after the catch would stomp on the applause as paulapaul stated. So I think it would be better to do it before the loading and catching. However since I cannot take the bullet from the shell to crush it and cannot prepare the cartriges in front of the audience. The crushing of the bullet would be limited to my muzzle loader routine. I would bring out a box of several bullets and crush one keeping the other for loading.

Since I have not seen P&T's bullet catch I would still be amazed and to be fair could care less that P&T have done it. I saw P&T do rope through neck and no one in the audience screamed "Copy cats". However I agree with others who said lose the bullets changing places and the crushing of the bullets; it diminishes the effect.
