I define it as a series of moves involving 2 or more cups, and 2 or more balls.
Thus, the plural cupS and ballS. This leaves it completely open to all the creativity anyone can stomach. When P&T went to Egypt for the "Magic & Mystery Tour," they clearly stated that what was pictured on the 'glyphs was a game and not the magicians' version of C&B.

Josh -
Unless it is mentioned under another name, the Cups & Balls are not in any version of the bible of which I am aware. In the King James bible, the word "cup" is listed once, "ball" appears once, and the word "cups" is found 8 times. The word "balls" does not appear at all. None of these occurrences make any reference to conjuring, magic, games, or performance of any sort. My curiosity is piqued and I would really be interested to know where in the bible you saw this and in what version. Thanks, dc

I think it's neat that we're still so interested in a trick that was in the Bible. I am interested in where this might be... Perhaps we are talking about the Latin found in the Mass, where Hocus Pocus is derived. Or perhaps when Jesus says, "Take this cup from me..." or "This is the cup..." But for a cup and a ball... or three cups and three balls, I know not of what you speak. (I would deny it three times, but that is just too Biblical). Interest definitely piqued. RevJohn |

Getting back to the heiroglyphics... If you look at all the wall, you will see it is neither cups and balls or even a GAME... it is all agricultural stuff, cooking, etc. so the assumption of magic is wrong, they are most likely molding bread or cake of some kind.

The serious student of this area of magic will learn misdirection, sleight of hand skills, timing, acting ability, economy of motion, and confidence. For the laymen I would say that it is like a 3 ring circus filled with fun, mischief, and big surprises. Thanks for the post James!

That's one for the superfluous one!
Well done! I thought you might have been referring to the passage: "And when Pharaoh saw the great magic of Moses before the throne, he asked, 'Playest thou the game of the balls and the cups?' And Moses did bring forth his cups, placed three balls upon a low table, and proceeded to bore the beejeezus out of Pharaoh. "After the passage of the third hour, Pharaoh spake unto Moses, saying: 'Enough! Begone!' And Moses did drop a load of bricks...without straw."

This is all spelled out in great detail on my web site. Thanks to Dr. Steffen Taut of Dresden for sending me the drawings that Howard Carter made of that wall of Tomb 15 at Beni Hasan. Percy Newberry completely misinterpreted that entire line of drawings.

I define it as a demonstration that even if the inquisition was horrifying in torturing and burning jugglers, maybe in some cases they my have been right to be suspicious. There are still official exorcists in the Christian religion... I met one of them who opened the Vtican archieves for me. I resented the tortures used to get the confessions, but I was impressed with some effects not achieved by sleight of hand. Then I demonstrate that some routines were not done by sleight of hand and juggleries but that the effects have no possible explanation.
This is what the C&Bs mean for me: it's nice to imagine that there is real magic out there that is not resorting to magician's skill.

Early on I bought into the Egyptian drawing being cups and balls. I even foolishly included it in my patter. Amazing what a little extra time to ask questions can do for one. The last time I heard anything remotely resembling the Egyptian tomb drawing was a Jewish magician of my acquaintence say, "This is so old the children of Israel watched it at the foot of the Pyramids...during their annual trip to Miami Beach."
