Michael-
I have a ****load of cats, and last year had to put one down. Smokey was 18, and up until a few weeks before we put him down, he was a model cat. Never missed the box, never a behavior problem. One night, I woke up and realized he was in bed, peeing on my head. After the shock wore off, my wife and I realized that he had gone blind during the night and couldn't find his way to the box. Once we kept him in closer quarters, he returned to using the box. Within a few weeks, though, he started having trouble swallowing- couldn't drink, etc. We realized it was time to put him down. We brought him to the vet and stayed with him the whole time- it was a lot tougher on us than Smokey- he just laid his head down, stuck out his tongue, and went to sleep. Afterward, the vet explained that in all likelihood he had a brain tumor, hence the disorientation/blindness/box situation. It's never easy to do, but it is the one last duty you have to your pet. Sleep well, you did the right thing. TP |

Thank you very much for the encouraging words, and for sharing your story... I'm sorry to hear that. Oddly enough, my cat is also named Smokey, and ALSO the big moment was when he peed near my mom's head on her bed. What a weird coincidence!
My mom and I left the vet promptly before they put Smokey down.. I for one certainly couldn't take it, and I'm sure my mom would have been ever worse.

I think staying or not staying is a very personal decision, but for me it was a no-brainer. What really surprised me, and made it a little easier, was that we were allowed to take him home and bury him. I thought we were going to have to have him cremated, but they gave him back to us, we brought him home, and buried him in the yard. We buried him with his favorite humpy pillow and planted a rose bush over him. It's a nice memorial, and a little warning for the rest of our cats!
