I was hoping to get some advice on classic palming 4 coins and releasing them one by one. There are a few routines I would like to learn that require starting out with 4 coins classic palmed. Are the four coins supposed to be slightly angled or directly on top of each other? Currently my hand looks more natural when the 4 coins are staggered but I can control my muscles better when dropping coins one at a time when the coins are completely flush at the edges with each other.

I think you should do what you feel the best fits you.
Personnaly, I prefer when the coins are slightly angled. For me, it is easier to make them drop one by one. Also, I believe it is important you practice in the condition you will perform your routine. I always use this kind of sleight stand-up and my coins naturally gets angled when I start droping the first coin. |

Over the years I have learned it both ways...but started with the sleight angle and using the 3rd finger to move the bottom one.
For fun and practice..and a nearly normal routine I sometimes use 4 different size coins from dime to quarters... (real men use smaller coins.... with tongue somewhere near my cheek) When a routine goes well I feel 5'9....usually I am 5'5". Enjoy the play along the journey... Reed McClintock's "Classic Palming With Coins" is a good DVD. It shows different method to practice/exercise the Classic Palm.

I heard David Roth speak at a lecture recently concerning this very same topic. His stance was the coins should be completely flush, while maintaining a natural position with the palming hand. He said if you stagger the coins or add any extra movement, then you must "adjust" which attracts unneeded attention. It is possible to do it as he says, but it will take some practice. I know it took me personally, several months.

You can step the coins in a way while doing the classic palm so that your pinky can pull it off the classic palm into finger palm.

All I can say is that I keep them flush and I practiced it for months before I could do it constantly one at a time. Its all about muscle memory which in returns becomes muscle control.
Good luck. Rome wasn't built in a day....lol The Cpatain Tim

When first leaning to do this I staggered them. However, I now keep the coins flush.
This is one of those things that take a certain feel that only comes through practice.

I find that bending my wrist forward a little somehow aids in the dropping of the coins one by one.

I keep them flush and for quite a while I could not release 1 at a time accurately. I let it go for a whle and the next time I palmed 4 coins, I easily was able to release 1 whenever needed. Now as I walk around with palmed coins, I am able to do this now. It seemed like it would take forever to do but now here it is.

Keep them flush or angled, it's up to you. Make sure are the coins are facing the same way, either all heads up or all tails up.

Make sure are the coins are facing the same way... Hmm...I've never thought of that. Any particular reason why that is important? I tend to just jam them in there and not bother too much which way they face. |

Thanks for asking, Jocce. I use this technique in my competition act. I can actually palm four in each hand, and I keep loading the cards as a running joke. I have noticed that if I place them all the same way, they just separate easier. Or, they do for me. I also hold some cards and the deck in my hand as I am doing this. Just work on making both hands looking the same as much as possible. If you have any other questions, just feel free to ask.

Sorry, I was just letting you know how to use the sleight or technique in a routine. Why else would you drop the coins unless you drop them into a glass like most magicians?
