I can see you being offended by these types of reactions. You just have to act professionally and move on. In the service industry (I was a waiter and briefly worked in a casino) I was taught "the customer is always right" even when you know he is wrong, he is right! So apologize and move on.
The worst thing you can do is call Jesus a magician! That sort of like telling a vegan Tofu is meat! Or maybe its more like telling a non-vegetarian tofu is like meat, cause the more you love meat the less you'd settle for Tofu, even really good tofu. |

Well, I do not think calling Jesus a Magician is the worst thing you can do... but it is not the way you want to describe Jesus to ANYONE.
And how did we get on Tofu? I love Tofu... |

Just my sarcastic side coming out. You could always produce 3 6's from a deck for them!!!
Just kidding. Some are meat eaters and some are vegetarians. It stinks having to eat veggies when that top sirloin looks so good. |

I was once subbing for a middle school class. One child in particular caused trouble the entire day. At one point I turned to him at random and said "Don't." He said "what? I didn't do anything." "You were about to. Weren't you?" He dropped his head. "You a mindreader or something." "Sure am" and I proceeded to give him one of the best cold readings of my life. He was well behaved the rest of the day.
As I was leaving school, another teacher, wholly unknown to me, walked up and said "I don't believe in mind reading!", and stood as if waiting for a response. After a few seconds she added "There's only two who know the heart of man, that's God and the Devil, and you're not God!" I studied her for a few seconds and began to gently explain my position which she merely interrupted by repeating her earlier litanies. After ten minutes of nonsense, I simply haD my name removed from the list of available substitutes for that school. Now, I told you that to ask you this... Why is it that Christians (in general) never have anything good to say about anything else, including one another? Everything I tend to hear from Christians in the media tends to be some sort of complaint or protest of something. Explanations? |

I think Christians in general always have good things to say to each other, encouraging one another and just engaging in fellowship.
So like Terry Owens says, maybe its the Christians you meet. As for the original question, I've never had that reaction to magic here in Australia. In fact, 2 years ago, we had a huge event for high schoolers combining 30+ churches and we used magic for entertainment, that's how I got my start in magic, volunteering to learn and become a magician! |

Before we are too critical about the person that deemed Magic as evil, it might be best to seek to understand first, and then be understood. First, we do not know if this female person has ever been embarrassed, ravished, or defrauded by someone doing "tricks". Jim Jones (Jonestown Guyana) lured his congregation into following him by performing simple magic tricks. He hypnotized them into thinking he was the "real" thing. He crossed the line. He also paid the ultimate price, along with others that were innocent.
The performance of magic has different effects on people. Some folks get emotional when they see it. Some people think it is humorous. Some people think it is real, but good. Some people think it is real, but evil. Some folks thinks it is a puzzle. Some people fear the experience. Some people just hate magic, like I hate watching golf on tv. I can choose to change the tv channel. I do like watching pros golf in person. The female patron simply chose to change the channel and not watch magic that night, for what ever reason. Why do we assume that everyone out there is eager to see our magic? It is that type of arrogance that does turn people off. Christopher, you did the right thing by moving on to another table. A simple smile, and "I trust your evening will be enjoyable and you have the best server in the house" would have smoothed that moment over. There are certain types of magic that "scream" demons. While it is a form of judgement, when a lay person or a Christian sees the likes of an Alice Cooper type magician (David Blaine and Chris Angel), Christ like is not the first thing that comes to mind (By the way, I have met Alice Cooper at a golf tournament. His father was a Christian minister.) Then there is the Bizarre type of magic that does strongly indicate supernatural powers. Magicians prior to the 1930's made sure imps and demons were on their lithographed posters, which are selling in the thousand's of dollars today. We are still paying for that today. Even King James (who had the Bible translated) thought that all Magic was evil. That is about the time Reginald Scot wrote the DISCOVERIE OF WITCHCRAFT. After the Discoverie was printed and distributed, King James had the book DAEMONOLIGIE published. This was his command book ordering all copies of THE DISCOVERIE OF WITCHCRAFT and other similar Tomes be burnt. You can see his rendering of this in the King James translation of Acts 19:19. Magic is a "curious" art, you know. Ironically, the first printing of the Discoverie is worth between $10,000 and $30,000 today, depending on the shape. When our performance is over - do we genuinely want our audience to continue to think that we did "real" magic or do we just want to suspend their disbelief while we are performing? Audiences can pick up on this. No offense, but when we perform, it is not about us. It is about them and spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. We do not ever want to cross that line that would make someone else think otherwise. That is where performing in a more light hearted manner or providing an upfront disclaimer is important. Lastly, ones approach could also turn some people off. Christopher you might want to take the word "magic" out of your language. Illusion works well. "Would you like to be entertained....." works also. I hope this might help, for many Christian magicians have encountered the same reaction that you did. As a young kid, I can see how this would confuse you. As you get older, it becomes easier to empathize and understand. Christopher we wish you the best in your endeavors and pray you understand the Good News of Christ. Accepting or rejecting Christ is the ONLY real decision that counts during ones life. This is quite an interesting thread as I have had similar experiences when I did Gospel Magic. Here in Georgia, there are still some groups who express that magic is Satan's work. As was stated, you cannot change their mind on this, so it is futile to try.
Certain churches, who have hired me for the messages in magic, sometimes have reservations as they know not what to expect from a show. Although I do like using comedy in some of the routines, some do not appreciate that. I had one person tell me how I was the devil's instrument because I did magic. I told her that was not a Christian attitude and only God could judge me. After talking with her, she felt like she had blasphemed God by judging me. People have certain convictions about things, and magic is one of them. I will not argue a point with anyone. As long as it does no harm to themselves or others, I will respect their belief, no matter how ignorant they may seem of what magic is all about. Remember to "Keep the Faith". Glenn
