Had to throw in a few things.
Wooden balls are just fine if they have the proper finish. Plus, with the wooden sxxxx you can do some ball and silk moves that are just not possible with the Fakini. Proper handling prevents any sxxxx problems. I used a German set for years. I have a set of Thayer 2' or so turned (wooden) balls that I got from the Griffins. Eventually, I will have them restored with the proper finish. Now, Fakini. Quality products and great service. The "tackiness" of these balls offer both benefits and challenges to the manipulator. A differing set of silk and ball moves can be executed by taking advantage of the tackiness of Fakini b. balls (not to mention other moves). I currently enjoy using the 2 1/8" balls...mainly white for superior visibility. Occasionally, I will do color changes...but not always. As far as glass balls and "bubbles," I love the concept. However, I believe it is much easier to encounter visibility problems using these in a stage setting unless you do your homework. And, even so, I prefer to go with ball manipulation and associated props that provide the best visibility in a stage setting. Rough rule of thumb...think 1800 seat theatre and plan accordingly. That way everything you do can be seen by all. Exceptions abound of course, which is the reason for the "rough rule of thumb preface. Johnson |

About Fakini billiard balls some people have recommended 2" size but I think they may be too big. I ordered a set of 2" size and according to my experience I have found 2 important drawbacks:
1. The bigger the balls are, the heavier. In many routines, you produce 4 balls in one hand, and you have to hold them without falling. What's more, you have to stretch the fingers a lot to hold 4 2" balls in one hand and this requires a lot of practice (much more practice than holding smaller ones) 2. It´s usually very difficult to cover angles if your hands are not big enough to p*** them. I have been rehearsing hundreds of times with these balls in front of a mirror and they flash (if your hands are not big enough) if you don't have a lot of care with the movements so your act (moves, gestures) becomes less natural because you are concentrated not to make wrong moves. With this post I don't want to say that Fakini's are not good. They are by far the best!! But it's very important to think carefully of the appropriate size. I ordered a set of 2" because many magicians recommended me them. They told me they are perfect for stage (and they actually are). But I didn't think of the size of my hands and I think I made a mistake... I think you already may have bought them but anyway I hope my advices help to other magicians thinking of ordering Fakinis. Carlos,
Good Points. Get some cheap balls or simply wad up aluminum foil to different diameters to check angles and see what works best for you. A little homework and effort can always save ya some cash. Johnson |

Thanks Johnson,
Yeah, the idea is to reproduce somehow balls of the same size to check angles and comfort. I've recently phoned Frank to order 1.625" balls (which are sligthly smaller than 1.75). Frank told me these balls are the smaller that come with shell. As I'me get used to 2" ones I think I won't have many problems to work with them and they still are suitable for stage. I'll let you know... Carlos |

How about making your own balls out of aluminum foil... you can walk out with a sheet or a couple of sheets of foil and make the first one right in front of the audience, may be very deceptive.... haven't tried it.
I live in the desert and have found that I can't hold onto anything that has been made for magic... Haven't tried the fakinis Bought some wildly decorated rubber balls probably 2 inches from Target. Made a S***l out of multi-colored polimer clay... Gimmick is fragile so I have to be carefull not to drop it and I can't doa full ball roll with the gimmick, like I could with my golf balls... but I like it anyway. |

I purchased both a 2" and a 2 1/4" set of Fakini balls from Denny Haney with the idea of practicing with the 2 1/4" set and performing with the 2" set. I think that was a recommendation from Henry Hay's _Amateur Magician's Handbook_, the idea being that if you practiced with the larger set, performing with the 2" set would provide extra confidence, ease and surety. Keeping the 2" balls concealed is less a problem if you keep the fingers of the left hand slightly (and naturally) curled rather than spread out like a starfish. When using large balls, it also helps if you do the Roy Benson/Alan Wakeling routine rather than the standard "roll the ball out of the s***l" routines most magicians use. I think Mark Wilson and even his son Greg did a modified version of the Wakeling routine. As I recall, Alan was a technical adviser on the Allakazam show. You can find the Wakeling routine in Steinmayer's _The Magic of Alan Wakeling_ and possibly also in the _Mark Wilson Complete Course in Magic_, and you should be able to find Benson's routine in Levent's _Roy Benson by Starlight_ book. I do recommend also that you use white balls rather than any other color. I think a couple of different texts point out that the white balls look larger.
