I sort of avoided manga / anime for the longest time as I was under the impression that it was mostly all pretty childish. But various independent sources recommended 'Deathnote' to me so I finally watched the anime, then the live action movie(s), and now I am working my way through the manga. Not bad. Maybe not quite as involved a storyline as in the classic comic 'Watchmen', but pretty darn close.
Today I heard about another manga (and anime) series, called Gunnm or Battle Angel. One that James Cameron (of Terminator fame) is turning into a movie. So I might read and watch that series next, as I'm assuming it must be at least half-way decent for Cameron to get involved. So, my question is, what are some other good manga / anime series?

The live action tv shows are useless of death note. The cartoon is brilliant.

You want "involved," try Neon Genesis Evangelion. Then try to understand exactly what it is you just watched! (Imagine The Prisoner with giant robots!)
If you're willing to accept "silly," go for "Ouran High School Host Club" or "Azimanga Diaoh" both of which involve school kids and can be silly and heartfelt at the same time! Quote:

I'm probably one of the few who like the third one ("L-Change The World") which has nothing to do with the original Deathnote storyline.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I'll look into some of these other series over the next few months.
I agree that the Deathnote movies did not do the story complete justice, but at the same time I still enjoyed them (actually, I've only watched 2 of the 3 so far) and I was impressed that they managed to cover as much ground as they did. I thought they did a pretty good job with the shinigami. And I was not bothered too much that they changed some elements of the story ... presumably in part to keep the audience guessing. I was also thinking, the story is tragic and interesting enough that it could probably be turned into a decent modern opera. Maybe we'll see that down the road.

I am a huge fan of any anime/manga done by Rumiko Takahashi (Lum, Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha)
Inuyasha is a bit too oriented towards 14 year old girls for my tastes, but for the most part, Ms. Takahashi creates some really charming and exciting cartoons. An aside, if you've ever seen AKIRA, but not read the books, do yourself a favor and read those books. The movie is simplistic and pointless in comparison...

For a high art interpretation look to Takashi Murakami.

I am actually reading the comic book series of death note in Chinese for language practice and I think it is pretty darn good.

Unfortunately, the style is so "cartoonish" that the translator ("4 Kids") decided to "dumb down" the storyline and remove anything "objectionable." Then they wondered why people got upset and stopped watching. (4 Kids has decided that the animae field is "washed up" and will no longer contract to translate any new titles.) Someone else has taken the title and released it translated but basically uncut. I don't know the company so you'll have to do some research, just try to stay away from the 4 Kids version.

There are some wonderfully complex and beautiful anime/manga works out there. I find it as valid of a form of entertainment/literature as any other.

I just saw the English translation of the first episode of "Ouran High School Host Club." Now I have to save up my money for something!
http://www.funimation.com/ouran/ Click on the tiny "play" button on the screen on the right and you can see the first episode free and legal!
