Hey everyone,
I'm trying to track down Tim Ellis routine. Does anyone know if he has marketed it or put it in print? Any help you could give me would be much appreciated! Luke

Tim has put a link on the boards somewhere of himself performing the illusion, but sorry, can't find it. Sure someone will help out.

It's been standard sideshow repetoire, longer than you have, Nipps. Don't you recall the threads here and on Slim's group, where we came up with all the acts, that anybody could remember?

It may be on the wrong section of the caffe (discuss) but for the record - Tim Ellis is one of the people who is behind "supporting originaltiy in magc" and against copying other peoples effects etc. He does do the razor blade eating thing and it is on one of his DVDs (ellis in wonderland I think). To show support for Tims campaign I am selling pirate copies of his DVD (played on the tv and filmed from my mobile phone 3 foot away - its a bit shakey but hey its all funds for the cause) to raise funds to try and stop illegal copying of effects in magic - mmmm maybe I'm going about fund raising the wrong way?.
Also for the record it is a great version - the Razor blades are real and come from the likes of boots the chemist (a chemist shop - such cunning names we have in the UK) and they really go in the mouth! And you are unlikely to get cut BUT you may a little - oh and the blades remain sharp and are demonstrated first! No swithcing out blades! I love it. PS illegal copies of the DVD £58 (thats $100) + p&p (please don't actually contact me to buy an illegal copy I'm not that daft...... dang it takes me a lot to say "yes he does it and it is on his DVD - ellis in wonderland". Oh well always have been full of wind......and other nasty smelling stuff. |

Thanks guys I found it in the end. Its so simple! none of this messing around with those daft stands and gaffed cups and things. Sorry about putting it in the "wrong area" I was under the impression everything we do is ILLUSION? I just thought this type of ILLUSION was better suited to the sideshow area. as opposed from the ILLUSION area. My bad. Does anybody know when this effect originated? The oldest I have seen performed was by Jasper Maskelyne in probably the 40's? Or maybe even before then because it was before he went to war maybe the 30's? Does anybody have any info on any old time sideshow performers who did this as their act?
All the best, Luke

Nothing I have ever done (onstage) has been an illusion.
I would rather eat dung than be a magician. Longer than Harley has even.

I started out as a magician before going into sideshow. There is a huge difference.
Magic is an illusion. Sideshow is exactly what you see. Real glass, real swords, real nails, real fire, no tricks, no switches, just skill. I am afraid I don't know who originated the act, but from what I seem to recall (Feel free to correct me) it was first done with needles as opposed to razor blades. I do perform the razor blades bit myself, but never in conjunction with sideshow. I always keep those acts seperate. Gwyd |

It's been in Indian magic for a long time, using beads. It was brought to London, circa 1815, and done with pearls. Needles were the standard by 1890. Double-edged razor blades entered the scene around 1920.

That's my MAJOR problem with illusionists... after ANY act the audience goes home thinking "well, we KNOW it was fake". After the sideshow stunts, they go home contemplating therapy.

Art is in the eyes of the beholder... I'll agree with mark.
I dabble on both sides of that fence and find interesting but different reactions. In my experience:
In both cases the art is in the performance of the act. I don’t see deception in the performance of sideshow acts, but rather “acting” in the manner in which the performance is presented. Is acting deception – That is s different issue? In both cases, amazement = entertainment.. Steve |

Eating dung is a great stunt = amazement = entertainment = being sick !!! The real pro will of course eat the sick as he prefers hot food.
Selling the lie in magic is harder for me than selling the truth in Sideshow (A quote to me in a letter sent back in 1962 from Barry Walls) Good old Barry was way before his time and used many of the stunts "Invented" by others since his death !!! To mix magic / illusion with sideshow has been discussed before and I for one still can`t get nailed down to an answer. Ken. |
