Hello!

Knowing that it is impossible to get any doves in my town, I ordered a pair of Sponge Doves from Alan Wong which is affordable. I can't wait to receive the doves!

Anyone here use fake doves in their act? How do you convince the audience that the doves are actually real?

Any thought(s) on this product (sponge doves)?

Hi Kenny thanks for your purchase. The doves look real enough...but they aren't meant to replace them! The sponge doves are more for comedy and you can palm 2 in a hand! Produce them anywhere you want, balloon to dove, dove pans etc. I suggest you act seriously to do a comedy dove act by producing a lot of them. PM me if you like to discuss further.

To convince people that a fake dove is real you could use a sound from a "singing" dove and got it played after you've produced the fake dove.
But this would only work with one dove.

Have a look in the ambiance section of your local biggest music shop. You might find special fx soundtrack CDs for home movies.

Perhaps if you want people to see it as real dove ,then use Rubber Dove as it's more convincing looking than sponge one.

I have never, never seen a fake dove
(rubber, foam, or feather)
that “reads” as a real bird from stage.

At best, a fake dove can substitute for a real dove
for a second or two, when both are used in a routine.

If you can’t use real birds, then don’t do bird magic,
there are so many alternatives for production items, there is no need.
If you try to replicate a dove act with fake birds you’ll be laughed off the stage.

I recently saw a magician perform the cage-vanish,
with an old rubber canary flopping in the cage,
he talked on and on, and the bird looked fake at best,
and stone-dead at worst…
it totally ruined the moment when the vanish finally came.
It would have been better to use an empty cage than a bad fake.

Go for the real deal… or use an inanimate object,
or else play it for high-comedy.
