People with deep religious beliefs often dump on DB, which frankly mystifies me. If you just watch his stuff, there is no doubt that he is a superior entertainer, and very skilled in the art of mentalism. You may not like his take on religious belief, but that is beside the point when it comes to his skill. I have to admire the skills of those old southern baptist evangelists that I used to see holding tent revivals along the roadside ... can't say I think much of their beliefs, but their skills in crowd manipulation were superb ... and many of them provided good entertainment for their audiences.

Derren is always interesting to listen to. Cold Reading "secrets" were around long before they were ours (meaning mentalists) and as many times as these secrets are exposed and phony TV psychics are exposed, people still eat it up and buy into it. |

There's a little chaff amongst the wheat, but mostly he's right on the money and a most needed voice. Here Derren said little more than Mr Welles did those years ago, although he was more specific as to who he saw as the culprits, charlatans, con-artists but also seemed a little more generous with them. Anyway I enjoyed hearing his opinions and his experience about it. Mt. |

I thought Derren looked slightly unwell for a second, when Professor Dawkins commented on the dubious morals of anyone who used simple tricks to present themselves as having amazing powers.
I hope he's okay.

The chess thing was probably done even before this, but my first memory of it was in 'Maverick', in the 1970's on a riverboat in the Deep South

I thought Nyman was religious, too. Dunno about Andy Nyman's own religiosity or otherwise, but here's a fun clip of him poking fun at a very bizarre Christian TV show... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ulGXKULw_pk :) |
