I love the effect. I have Davids book "Crashcourse On Kid Shows" and he talks about the silver scepter in it. I saw his use of it on his youotube video and I feel in love with it. I am ordering mine this week. How long do you actually use it or draw it out for Brian? Mr. Ginn suggests about 2 or 3 min. Is that about your length of use?

Yes, about 2 or 3 mins. The routine I use is very similar to Terry Herbert's, on one of his dvd's.

Martin King, on another thread on the same page titled how much do you charge, on the last page you say you done a show for your daughters class back in july. So whats the point of this thread?

His point was that he was looking for advice, tricks, patter etc. Its clearly stated at the beginning of the thread, and I think everyone on this thread did a wonderful job stearing him in the right direction! Hopefully he had a wonderful performance, and will be remembered by all!

Trickychaz take a chill pill and re-read what I said. I wa asking what the point of this thread was ? The reason I asked was he claims to be doing a show for his daughters class, his first in 12 years which makes no sense when you read his post here http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......tart=240

Okay, just to clarify.
For about 12 years of my life I was a full time professional family entertainer (in the U.K.)...if you want proof go here... http://www.spotlightentertainments.co.uk/thankskids1.htm and you'll see a testimonial letter that a client sent about me to an agent Since moving to France about 8 years ago, I've performed for my daughters class about three times but all three shows lasted about 30 -45 minutes. However, this show for my son they wanted a minumum of 15 mins. and a maximum of 20 mins. My problem was I've never performed such a short show, I just didn't know how to! This is why I posted my question. As it was, it went 10,000% FANTASTIC! (Of course, being the perfectionist that I am, I wasn't happy with it but I never will be!) I'll give you a fuller report when I've got time to and thanks to all that helped...especially trickychaz...you're all the greatest! Warmest regards, Martin Posted: Dec 20, 2008 8:33am Got a few extra mins to let you know what I did and how I got on... I was taken into the school's tiny gym hall & given a few minutes to set up before the kids (3 - 7 years old) were orderly filled in before by the teachers. (=That's why I love performing for schools!) Warm Up = I performed a quick warm up consisting of "Hands up who's here?; hands up who's not here?; and hands up who couldn't care less if they're here or not?". Followed by Terry Herberts counting the children from his video. Effect No. 1 = 'World Famous Banana Trick' (I just simply put them away at the end) Effect No. 2 = Mark Leveridge's 'Commercial Sponge Ball Routine' (with child helper) Effect No. 3 = Haunted Key Routine with a gimmicked esapology padlock (I locked the padlock and gave it to a child to hold and then let the haunted key turn in my hand to explain how Santa Claus gets into peoples houses and when the child pulled on the padlock it was magically(?) open) Effect No. 4. = 'Fiber Optics' (A very short version) Effect No. 5 = 'Rocky Racoon' (Apart from some of the old gags I just used Rocky as a way of wishing them all a very Merry Christmas) I finished off by making balloon dogs/flowers for the teachers of each class. All the kids loved it! The teachers said it was better than ever! My second biggest critic (my wife) said it was fantastic! That's about all I can tell you. Thanks once again to one and all. P.S. I actually took a lot more material than that but I ran out of time. I also didn't really have a set structure and played it very much by ear. |

Glad to hear all went well. Sometimes the victory is simply in the doing. If the kids loved it, that's all that counts.

Congratulations Martin! Sometimes we're our worst critics. Sounds like you've gotten great response from the kids, your wife and the teachers. What else can you hope for?

Glad everything went well for your act. I am drifting away soon from the magic Café. There are a lot of great people on here, and they have a lot of useful advice to share, but their are quite a few that are NEGATIVE! I would much rather learn from them at conventions face to face.
Hope you have many new success to come. Happy Holidays Chaz |

Sounds perfect! Stick to the classics like silk/TT, sponge balls, and ropes, then throw in your personality with Rocky Raccoon, and you are off to the races!
