I really have no idea where to post this so I will start here.....
Anyone ever see the show on the Discovery Channel called Time Warp? Basically they film intresting things in high-def super slow motion. I have seen on the show, fire breathing, juggling, breaking things in a blender, blowing things up etc. I find the show very intresting. Here is my question. I would love to see some magic/slight of hand filmed like this, I think it would be very cool. Cups and balls, maybe a pass, back palming, even a simple french drop. On the Discovery Channel website there is an area for suggestions for them to film, and there are a few people who suggest different magic tricks. The obvious problem is exposure. However if someone could pull off some tricks or slights and not get caught even with the high speed camera, that would be cool. |

Half the magic dvds produced these days have "super slo-mo" practice clips.

Well, today's DVD's have "super slo-mo" clips, but they're usually just the regular 24 fps footage slowed down so you can catch it frame by frame. You could achieve the same effect just by using the controls on your DVD player.
In Time Warp (which you can watch online free at that link through January 7th, 2009), they're using a specialized high-speed camera that runs on a scale of thousands of frames per second. I doubt much sleight of hand could withstand that kind of scrutiny, but it would be potentially interesting to see which magicians held up the best under those conditions. |

90% of magic moves would be boring in the extreme super slow mo 1000 frames per second. They serve no purpose except as slow motion exposure and we do not want to condone that do we?
Oh and by the way, the idea of the show is to SHOW THINGS IN SLOW MOTION! That is the show. Why would they film it and not try to capture it? The idea makes no sense. Slight of hand done right, involves "misdirection" not speed. Again the point of the show is to capture fast things, and slow them down. Juggling this happens, circus tumblers and such, but magic does not fall into the same catagory. It is just going to be blatant exposure.

They should show the work of card legend Richard Turner in slow mo. The man is a Walking Guiness Record. Slowing him down would only show exactly how impossible the moves he does are.

Danny,
I agree with what you are saying. I just think it would be cool for the magic community to see these slights in the Time Warp type super slow motion. Offering it to the general public would be exposure. Unless there were some thing that could not be detected, but then it would not make intresting tv I guess. |

That is the point. Without showing them, why put it on TV?
Oh and I don't care WHO the move is done by, it can be caught from the right angle with the right camera at the right speed. Slowing down Richard to 1000 frames per second will show his muscles tensing, his tendons flexing, and things you can not imagine happening in his hands. Plus they show it from the angles so they CAN catch him. Otherwise it is not good TV.

I was recently on the suggestion forum to give them the idea of snapping a mouse trap on the human tonge among other stunts that I do, and I saw about 40 suggestions of slomo magic. I was shocked. Most of the suggestions that I read seemed well intentioned, but really... Slight of hand in slomo?! it's exposure.

I agree with the exposure, but as I said I would be very intrested to watch some good slights in this type of slo-mo.

Ah. In that case. It would be pretty amazing.
I wonder how expensive these cameras are.

Tonight on Time Warp Penn and Teller are on. They just did the cups and balls and some fire eating. I am sure there will be some talk about this.

Lee Asher's Diving Board Double on Time Warp:
http://dsc.discovery.com/videos/time-warp-card-flip.html http://forums.theory11.com/showthread.php?t=19661 This was advertised on Lee's mailing list. Discovery channel gives it a more innocuous name than Diving Board Double, but that it what it is.
