That's most likely why there are not too many 'chicks' here with comments like that

There is a vast array of music out there, but it is not all "equal", so to speak, or even suitable for a performer's act. Some music becomes trite via overuse (e.g., "Mission Impossible"), but I still feel that music selected by a performer on his own, without consulting performance videos of others, is perfectly acceptable, even if it is used by others. Also, it is unrealistic to expect that something as ubiquitous as the music of "Rocky" or Cirque du Soleil should be the "property" of the first performer to use it.

Clinton that is fine. But we don't live in bubbles. You just said in an earlier post that you DO look at other magicians act for "inspiration". I don't get your argument because like Mark Parker has said do you think these performers found that music on their own? No they heard the Pendragons and cannibalized aspects of their act. What's so hard to get about that? Yes we all agree if you never saw Copperfield and you happened to pick his same music fine you're not copying.
What's the problem do you have nine thousand acts to music most of us only have MAYBE 14 acts to music at most, you can't find 14 freaking songs that some else hasn't used? Also, you can't actually disagree with Silverfox at all logical within her own argument because she stated "I think if a person truly STRIVES for creativity..." see the truly strives part obligates the intended "striver" to not have ANY previously used music or other aspects. If you want to understand what it's like to get closer to originality look at Dan Sperry or Peter Marvey these are levels of originality that most magicians NEVER consider. It's just to easy to follow. If a person made it their goal to not use the music others have used they would have a more distinct feel to their show (God forbid) (refer to Steve Spill's brilliant post earlier in this thread). I am done with this discussion, my point is easy to understand and clear. |

Although I do get "inspired" by other magicians' performances (as I'm sure the rest of you do), I don't remember posting that anywhere in this thread.
I do understand and appreciate originality. I've been an artist, musician, woodworker, etc. most of my life. I am NOT a performing magician, but I have performed Kuma Tubes to "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves, so that song is now off-limits to the rest of you... Quote:

I don't understand that sentence, since there is no punctuation... If you will list the 9,000 songs that have already been used by performers, then the rest of those on here who DO perform will have a point of reference...

The inherent problem with Magic I believe is summed up by the following:
You can walk into a Magic Shop with a $1000 and come out and call yourself magician, as to the unsuspecting viewer its possible to 'wing it' with some prop magic You can't walk into a Music Shop with a $1000 and come out and call yourself a musician...its pretty much impossible to 'wing it' Therefore we have a breeding ground for plagurism and mediocre performers that jump into magic with a few dollars to spend, no respect and corners to cut...I wish I had a solution to stop them, but rest assured its the talented performers that always shine through with longevity as creative originators in what they do...we can only hope the mediocre and plagurists fall away in time

In watching the Pendragons' new videos, I noticed that they use Peter Gabriel's "Rhythm of the Heat" for Clearly Impossible. This is the same music that was used by David Copperfield for his Water Levitation, I believe.
Under some of the "guidelines" mentioned above in the thread for use of music, which of the performers has "dibs" on the song?

I am in no way taking sides on this, but if you really want to "STRIVE for creativity," wouldn't you make your own music? Just a thought...
