To stop buying magic.
I have so much stuff already, I really do not need any more. At least that is what my wife tells me.
After much soul searching about a signature, I decided not to have one.

Ditto
1) To only buy what I'll actually use or need. 2) To concentrate on perfecting my Chop Cup routine. 3) Practice, practice, practice. Happy New Year!

I want to do some walk around/table hopping performances in 2009. I have a decent repertoire of appropriate tricks...all at about 85% performance level. I want to pick a handful, really polish them, and get in front of some people.
I have my MFA in acting, I've performed professionally as a juggler, and I used to demo magic at FAO Schwarz, so I do have some skills and experience. However, I'm just picking up magic again after a few years, and I'm a little nervous. I'm thinking of volunteering to do a few trial evenings of table hopping at a popular family restaurant. I know some Magic Café people will get defensive about doing this without pay, but it will only be for a few evenings, and I'm getting the chance to perfect my patter and gain some confidence in a new venue for me. This is not a place where they would ever pay someone to be an entertainer, and the clientèle are mostly blue-collar folks who probably don't get to see much, if any, live magic. Hope everyone has a wondrous new year! (And, like everyone, I also need to stop buying magic stuff too.) :cP |

Halfway into the first day of the new year, I'm already failing badly to improve myself in terms of laziness and concentration.
Again I have spent some time trying to read the theory section at the end of CC vol.2 and I just keep reading and re-reading the same few paragraphs while my mind wanders and daydreams. After a week with those pages, I couldn't tell you a single important thing written therein. It's like the info doesn't make it all the way to my brain. The material isn't beyond me, it just fails to arrive for some reason. I also realize that like yesterday and the day before, my feet will not take me into the other room with my laptop and notebooks to work on a script for a few effects that I know well in terms of sleights, but that I don't know how to perform. I want to do it, I even like writing magic scripts, but it isn't happening. As far as what I am actually able to do in real life, my magic practice is about as good as it can get. I do what I am able to which I suppose is as much as anyone can do. Most of the time it is quite a lot each day and most of the time I disappoint myself because I feel I should either do more or tackle more advanced material instead. Good intentions seems to be unrelated to what people actually do, which is what counts probably. Well, that all sounded depressing. Sorry. Happy new year everyone! May your wishes and goals all come true!

Happy New Years to all!
I hope to break the habit of purchasing almost every new effect and DVD that comes out, then realizing within seconds that the effect is something I will never do. I'm not sure I will be able to keep this resolution. It's always so tempting to think that this time maybe the effect will look and work like the trailer!

I have more now than I could likely do in a lifetime. At least with regard to magic, I resolve as follows:
1. To learn and practice those items/effects that I already enjoy, to be able to do them comfortably for an audience, however large, and whatever their makeup, with the confidence that comes only from practicing; 2. To quit buying new stuff until I am satisfied that what I want can't be found in what I have (after Extreme Burn gets restocked in my local B&M shop, then I'll stop, I swear); 3. To perform for my IBM Ring at a meeting (shudder--nothing like performing for magicians I suppose); and 4. To learn the classic pass. So...I gotta go get to work! Gill

1. Read more books and watch less DVD's
2. Buy less and dust off the stuff sitting on the shelfs 3. Find a routine for the stuff I dusted off before it gets dusty again |

Stop buying new stuff and catch up on old stuff.
Apply for membership to the Magic Castle I think both of those could fill up 2009 for me |
