Hi Everyone -
I'm very happy that Approaching Magic has been voted Book of the Year by members of this forum. If anyone imagines that I am blasé about this, I assure you that I am not. Sometimes it seems that we don't find magic - magic finds us, and this odd art of ours has been an obsession with me for almost as long as I can remember. The book was written over the past six years and was a mammoth undertaking - I tried to include a wide range of material, from impromptu effects, to new gaffs, to platform items. The reason anyone does something like this is to hopefully make some small contribution to magic. If the acceptance of the book means that I have entered the lottery of contributing something that will have a life after I'm gone then I am immensely gratified. To the many people who have sent me notes saying they are now performing this or that trick from the book, thank you - I enjoy them far more than the emails from the "Nicaraguan bank" that wants to send me a million dollars. To the people who have bought the book and nearly sold out the first edition, thank you - my wife has stopped looking at me funny. To the people who have come to my lectures and sat on uncomfortable chairs as I performed two and a half hours of material from the book, thank you. (Honestly, I think a big reason I lecture is to prove that the tricks work...) I've lived long enough to say that one of the great joys of my life is seeing people perform a trick of mine for an audience, even if it is an audience of one. Again - thank you. |

Mr. Regal's post is as witty as his writing in Approaching Magic. Rarely will you have this much fun while reading a book about magic. Get it while you can. Whether you are a close up performer or stage, card guy or otherwise, there's gold to be mined from its pages.

My vote also goes for Approaching Magic by David Regal. A wealth of material in the pages. You can even see him perform some of the effects from the book in Reel Magic Volume 6, the one with Dean Dill on the cover.

Hmmm... people casting votes after the winner has already been declared? Smacks of voter fraud to me! I demand a re-count!
In all seriousness, the Regal book is on my list of things to read. From the rest of the list, I only managed to read Trost's Subtle Card Creations which was quite good. The rest of my reading this year were books that were not listed. Well, ok... full disclosure... I did WRITE two of the books on the list, so I guess those count. And I have to say that I'm extremely honored and humbled just to have been included in such an illustrious collection of titles!
