I originally posted "Am I considered a beginner" and appreciate the responses. Can anyone recommend some killer tricks that get great reactions that do not require total professional skill? I heard "tagged" by richard sanders is very simple. I checked out the "all in the cards" forum and that's great! I don't know why I seem to love gimmicked tricks so much and tricks like "Cell out", "Blink", "TNR", "Cornered", "Enlightenment", etc. work great in my "family performances". As I mentioned before, "crystal cleaver" and "Prison box" are a little TOO MUCH self working if you know what I mean- even though I still like them. Once again I do have SOME skill as I stated in my last post but that's what I'm looking for. What tricks like these past or present are out there? I see literally thousands of tricks on many sites but some I'm afraid to buy because I don't know the skill level of that particular trick. My fiance actually bought me a bunch of tricks I requested for Christmas and she picked out one of her own.......a mentalism trick called FATE (the one with the poker chips and targets) and with the proper patter its very easy! (Great gimmick, too) Anyway, Please help and let me know whats out there similar to what I'm looking for. (if you go to "am I considered a beginner" post you'll see what other tricks I own to get a better Idea). Right now the extractor, Kennedy mystery box, and witness are getting the best reactions. Ellusionests "Revolution coin vanish" is getting killer reactions, too. WHAT ELSE IS OUT THERE? Any help would be appreciated.

I recommend taking a little trick buying break. Get yourself a good book (Royal Road, Modern Coin Magic, 13 Steps, Practical Mental Magic, Art of Astonishment, etc.) Spend some time reading through the book and enjoy.

Check out this thread. It's full of great tricks that don't take pro-level talent to perform.
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......um=41&41 You'll want to stay away from the "latest thing," and work on some classics. The latest thing tends to go into your "previous latest things drawer" and never be used again. The classics are always used again. Some more "modern" things seem to have gone into the classics category such as sponge balls and hot rods. Bill |

Extreme burn by Richard Sanders;
In a Flash by Jay Sankey; Any of John Bannon's Fractal Magic packet tricks; I haven't seen where you mentioned the Invisible Deck, which is one of the best if not THE best deck out there. You might look in to some rope stuff as well. Ropes don't require a gimmick (not necessarily, anyway) and there is a lot of stuff that can be done. Check out Fiber Optics Extended to see what I'm talking about. Good luck. Gill

Do not let yourself fall into the "packet trick of the week" pit. And while ellusionist puts out some good stuff at times, I suggest staying away from them while you learn and develop your magic. They are known to draw people into the "trick of the week" way of thought. Just my opinion on that.
One thing to consider - the people making these tricks of the week learned magic from the classics. Tarbell, Corinda, Dai Vernon, Slydini, Mark Wilson... and so on. Some of them are using that solid understanding to create effects to sell to people looking for a quick way to do magic. My point here is - if you take the time to leanr the classics and time tested methods - you can adapt them to your own needs and not have to rely on buying so many "quick easy strong effects". Also - without a solid base in the roots of magic... without knowing the masters such as Slydini, vernon, corinda, the list goes on... you will find that your magic is always shallow... and other more talented magicians will not take your interest in magic as seriously as they should. As for easy effects that play strong... much of magic has nothign to do with the trick itself but more with the presentation. A simple ball vase can be used to create extreme magic if presented correctly. Again, one of the classics Showmanship for Magicians by Fitzkee and Scripting Magic are two good books on this. Beyond Deception is also a good one. As a dealer, I often struggle when someone wants to buy the latest greatest trick when I know they lack the fundamentals.

Check out some Paul Harris stuff (Art of Astonishment)…. It is all over the map, some skill required and some hard stuff. After you get some of his effects under your belt, you should feel good about what you accomplished and will want to move on to more pressing effects.
Best of luck, Bruce |
