Hi everyone,
In frustration of finding a coin case I like (and can afford...please read "poor professional student") I decided to create my own. I used black leather, with a synthetic red velvet interior and zipper closure. What do you think? The following links are to pictures of the case along with a glimpse of my other coin case (which happens to be a neoprene Lowe Pro media case) I like both, but the Lowe Pro one is too large for my pants pocket. http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee204......31812019 http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee204......31812079 http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee204......31812362 http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee204......31812397 -Vinny |

Nice ... I was also considering making my own cause I'm picky lol ... like this a lot ... was wondering though if the zipper "marks up" the coins?

Looks to me like you did an excellent job. Did you hand stitch the leather? It looks stitched but I can't really tell for sure. However, it does look nice.

I just made it this week, so I can't tell you about marking the edges of the coins, but I will say that I am storing my "not so favorite" set of kennedy's in it until I am positive. As for the construction, I first made a pattern in which I used for the leather. I then cut out my leather pattern and used a high strength iron-on hemming tape to make the initial folds (ie. so the edges are rounded rather than rough cut leather) I next used the hemming tape to temporarily mount the zipper. after the zipper was attached, I used a dacron-type string to stitch the zipper to the leather (I am also an archer and dacron string is what I used to make bow strings out of) once this was all complete I cut out the "velvet" and used the hemming tape to mount the material so the entire inside of the case was lined and no leather was touching any of the coins. Hand-stitching leather is NOT fun...I have blisters to show for it.
I am somewhat satisfied with it, when I get the money, I think I'll get one of these http://themagicwarehouse.com/cgi-bin/findit.pl?x_item=SP7353 -or- http://themagicwarehouse.com/cgi-bin/findit.pl?x_item=CO6069 I just blew all of my "spare" money on the "Flying Tonight" DVD and another Johnson Shell...both of which I am extemely happy with. -Vinny |

Hey Vinny,
The case looks great! To spare your fingers next time, if you have access to a sewing machine, you can use it to pre-punch the holes in the leather--provided the leather isn't too heavy. First, it's helpful to use a leather needle in the machine. The leather needle has a triangular cross-section and a more robust sharp point than a regular sewing needle. Most sewing and craft shops carry them. Second, don't put any thread in the machine. Finally, just use the hand wheel (round thing on the side of older machines) or the pedal on a newer machine (just barely apply enough pressure to coax the needle through) to punch the holes. The slower the better, really. After the leather is punched, the hand sewing's a snap. cheers, Lin |

I noticed that http://www.theambitiouscard.com now sells a zippered coin purse like the one I made almost 4 years ago. I still use mine and I would definitely recommend you guys check 'em out, I love the design.
P.S. For those of you that are interested in seeing the one I made, I have since closed that particular photo account. These are the original photos in my new account http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd45......3133.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd45......3130.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd45......3129.jpg |
