Nah...I spent about 24 years as a nomad. I moved every couple years so I lived around the West Coast, Texas, and South (I know nothing about mid America and other than Boston about anything North of Virginia). I also travelled throughout Central and South America, Africa, Europe, the Mid East, and parts of Asia. I've been pretty well off financially and I've been broke, like right now. I realize that my life was something people wish they lived because when you get older and look back too many folks have been no where, done nothing, and never made love to a woman whos name they didn't know. I think they are missing out on something.
There are drawbacks though. I don't consider anywhere my 'home' because other than California after I settled down I never lived anywhere long enough to set roots. I also cannot and do not form close relationships with people because I never had the time to do so. My best friend, one of the only people I associated with for years, died of cancer. I'm married but if my wife left tomorrow it wouldn't bother me a bit and I actually like her. |

I wouldn't call it limited mobility, I just need a cane every now and again. Hey, some of us lived life, others of use rode bikes around. You see the difference is on your bike you go pass the people and buildings, in my life I was among the people and in the buildings. My life now consists of casinos, road trips back to the bay area (which I hate doing), and driving around Moundhouse, *** headquarters.

I have a bike riding story! I rode a bike after not doing so for 15 years about four miles and it hurt very much! I'm considering getting a bike because I was told it takes pressure off of feet and knees. I'd have to put strobe lights on it to make sure people see me, as if they wouldn't notice a giant man on a bike.

I would be more than happy to help you with any questions, and I will share any tips to make the ride safe and enjoyable.

You may want to look into a recumbent bike. It's even less stress than a regular bike and the seat is much more comfortable.

My doctor tells me to ride a recumbent. I'm old school. I need to be up high for the visibility. You think cars can't see you now? Try riding a recumbent. Plus if I am going to crash, I want to go head first.

I agree. Especially on the road. We have both upright and recumbent stationary bikes and I stll prefer the upright when I use one. But that seat is a killer. Piece of junk.
Upright is probably safer on the city streets. But it still might be something for Santa to look into. Especially if he goes stationary.

No doubt recumbents are waaaaay more comfortable on the body.
It takes a few hundred or more to get comfortable on a regular seat. That's why, or, I should say ANOTHER reason cycling shorts are important. Not only od they wisk away moisture from your body, they have padding in them to releive pressure from the pelvic bone. Good bicycle seat...$100 - $300 Good bikes shorts...$59 - $200+ Not a sore butt...priceless! Another important thing is to make sure the bike seat is level. |

What is a recumbant bike? Keep in mind I live in a mega rural area. We don't have bike lanes or sidewalks, it is a mix of asphalt, rock, and dirt roads. I was told to swim but there isn't a pool for 20 miles.

A recumbent is a bike where you are in a sitting position, almost like an easy chair. You have a seat rest so you can lean back and relax and your feet are out in front of you, and you pedal (almost) horizontally. The terrain is no biggie because the bikes come with all types of tires.
Being in a sitting position takes all pressure from your body. You can ride 100 miles and not be sore. You can even climb hills because the bikes have gears just like "ordinary" bikes. The worse thing is that they are in a lower position. When you are sitting in the saddle, you are only about as high up as the side view mirror on a car. I would suggest getting a beach type bicycle. The seat is wider and a little more comfortable. They have decent gears too. I know you just want some exercise and not interested in going for a 100-mile ride. A beach bike has wider tires and I think it will be very comfortable for what you are looking to accomplish. |

It's more like sitting in a chair than on a bike. I used to think they were pretty stupid. But they have gained popularity.

MagicSanta,
First, I'd like to to say that I know where you're coming from. Life is a roller coaster ride and I'm in a downward motion at the moment too. You seem like the kind of guy I could sit down with and have a few boiler makers with. For about 10 years I rode a 10 speed Ross in, around and thru the city streets of Paterson, NJ, to and from work 3 miles away. I had a padded seat, cuff strap, two rearview mirrors, a back rack with bungees for my case of beer , and tools for repairs. For me, early morning rides were best. No traffic, people opening car doors, etc. I saw less than when walking but more than when driving. I did get chased by packs of pet dogs sometimes but what the hell. Now I'm in an area with similar to yours and have a mountain bike my daughter gave me that I rode probably 5 times. In the city I could hop a curb to avoid a situation. Here I will either end up in a ditch, over a guard rail or in the woods. That scares me and the bike sits in my shed. I used to love it but haven't rode now in several years. No pool that I can afford here either. Used to swim a quarter mile 3 times a week at the YMCA. Now I just sit around dreaming. Oh! Hope you have a great 2009 and beyond. |

Forget recumbent bikes.
Get one of these. http://www.rhoadescar.com/4w1p-h.htm Ok...I am a dork, but I actually think they are cool. Mock at will. It has a cupholder. Gwyd |

How can I mock a bicycle that has a place for a beer cooler on the back? That's what I call riding in style.
Speaking of Style, Justin could use that on his tours and then offer a picnic in the park for an upcharge. Put the picnic basket right on the back of that Bad Boy.

I didn't even think about the cooler carrying capacity!
For tours-Justin would want this one! (Funny...I had the same thought!) http://www.rhoadescar.com/4w4p-a.htm Gwyd |
