I was hoping to get some advice here...
I have a new illusion where my assistant is inside a chamber suspended from the ceiling (with no b***) she has already climbed up using steps I am wearing a cloak.. we then need to perform the exchange.. (i plan on appearing in the rear of the theatre.) But here is my ?. My original thought was OK, I could stab swords in the chamber.. every sword that I pull back out.. gets thrown into the wings.. and after pulling out the last sword.. the Chamber falls apart & slams to the ground showing it empty.. (but during that slam..) I get closer then usual to the wings to perform the EX I prefer fast high energy illusions and do not like stalling for time.. Do you think that by performing the swords I am dragging out the illusion? I cannot use pyro, and although I have a few other ideas, I am curious to hear all of your ideas... the Chamber will be hanging as high as possible in the theatre... the stage is quite wide..so not just a single step in to the wings.. I I would prefer not to use any moving panels on stage etc.. for those of you who want to write in detail.. please email me but please still feel free to write on this forum, (as long as not too much exposure.. for lurkers) thanks JAY ZEE

I wouldn't use swords. Personally, I think it drags out the effect so the audience thinks that 'something is happening.'
You said you cannot use pyro, but what about flash paper? Tossing a lit piece of flash paper provides a distraction that the audience will follow to where it flashes. You might be interested in the new Pendragons DVD that is coming out soon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcdtiE5UbC0 I believe it teaches the switch shown in the video above, seen at 7:44.

Thanks. but I'm not allowed to use Fire, flash paper, Pyro, or any other type of flammable effect.. I used to use over $200 per show of pyro.. and now nothing.. it hurts I have to say it realy hurts! LOL
But my bank account loves it! yeah I know the flash paper idea. as Pendragons have used.. (they do awesome work)

I have heard of some kind of camera flash being used.
To do the switch, you really need a good misdirection. Or, you can do the switch MUCH earlier. The steps could be deceptive steps that get wheeled away as the box is lifted in the air. Once it is time for the swords, you leave the stage to get them and you switch with your assistant. Very simple. We did it this way when I worked a show with another magician.

What about a small flash pot built into the box. Load it up with Confetti and a wee bit of flash cotton. I'm sure that issnt pyro. Infact, its considered aerotechnics. With a blast of confetti, you execute the misdirection.

Actually we work on ships and even though you are talking about a simple confetti effect as far as the fire marshall is concerned we would still be using flammable Cotton/Paper, a Electric Match & essentially making a small explosion.
I heard about a juggler that came on board a ship and only during the show did he decide to pull out a finger flash loaded with paper & a Powder tip. he shot it during the show.. and WOW the crap hit the fan & the PM was so mad he ended up calling up the office & he ultimately got fired. I know some ships still use pyro, but they are really really strict.. and most ships have banned it.. I cant imagine even trying to get it on board anymore.. but thanks for the idea.. I used to use heaps of pyro in my shows.. and miss those days! LOL

You can use a CO2 cartridge to launch the confetti.. it's safer.. cheaper.. and you can buy them almost anywhere.. I even found some when I was in INDIA!!

Yeah CO2 is good..
But in the overall scheme of things... do you think using confetti will fit the theme of this illusion.. ? since we are re-creating a nightmare scene with video FX & Dark lighting scary music, Black Cloaks. I don't know if Pink Confetti & Bubbles would fit! LOLl just kidding! I just wonder if using swords to pull out of the (empty illusion) and then use the swords as a reason to go to the wings is better then just pulling a cable (while running into the wings) to drop the Panels on the illusion showing it empty (while we do the cloak switch in the wings)

You could have a large silk on a r**l that you give to your assistant in the chamber before it is closed up. Take the silk to the side of the stage and toss it into the air. It then flies to the chamber. When it arrives the sides flip down and show her gone. The flying of the silk should give you plenty of time to do the necessary exchange.

That's a brilliant idea!!! See that's why I asked in here.. to get people's different ideas working together!
that so different then anything we thought of! I even have a few r***s from Sean Bogunia. Thanks so much.. Keep these ideas coming. & we can end up with an amazing illusion! (the credits rolling up on the promo video might be long by adding all of you names! H AHA HA )
