I just saw this illusion and was wondering if anyone had any experience with it? I could see this as a potential opener for my stage show. The product can be found at Hocus-Pocus but I can't seem to copy the link for it.

MagicAuction had a very similar illusion for sale, but it was a large packing type crate instead of a desk. They also have a desk for sale - you could add your own briefcase and pretty much have the same illusion. Jim |

Actually it is not the same as the one in Magic Auction. That looks like it could hold six people!!! My illusion was designed almost 14 years ago and has been in my show ever since. There are only four in the world. Two sold at Hocus-Pocus, one was for a TV show in Asia and I own two. (actually the original was sold to a magician in NZ).
We took it to FISM in Dresden many years ago, and used it to vanish two people - we were actually accused of using a trap door, but as you know that was not allowed and the method was original to us. I know this fooled many well known magicians. You only get a short 10 second shot on my video - but in actual performance the briefcase it brought on stage by the MC, placed on table and the spot light goes on table. The lid opens, a 10 foot ladder comes out of the case and then I climb up the ladder out of briefcase. This is just one of many presentations. It can be used to vanish or produce a person. You are only limited by your imagination. The actual design is original to New Zealand magician and manufacturer Wayne Rogers. The best routine I EVER came up with this is an effect where I bring the briefcase on stage (as Chaplin), I place it on the table, open it up and do my opening part of my act. At some point my bowler hat catches fire, so I reached in the case, pull out a fire helmet, then a fire hose. I quickly take the hose and run off stage - then I came OUT of the briefcase, which is still on the table, with the other end of the hose, and a glass of water to put the fire out. It is one of the strongest and original pieces of magic I have ever come up with. The original table was designed by Wayne Rogers and is incredibly deceptive. The one on Magic Auction looks huge and if you know how mine works you will easily understand it is different. If they tried to copy mine then they got it all wrong as theirs looks different and I am guessing the method is different. My version can also be performed surrounded. Mine uses no mirrors like the crate you were talking about. Because I travel so much, I could not travel with mirrors that can easily break. My version has the advantage that you can carry the briefcase on and off which we did at FISM. My version packs flat which makes it easier to travel with. It's all in the design. The new version I own is made from metal and really packs flat. The ones I sold were made by a cabinet maker and he made them from wood, a little heavy for travel. I recently gave a set of plans to a well known Las Vegas magician who is interested in having this in his show - chances are you will soon see this in Vegas in a show. Paul

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the detailed information. Is your desk still available for purchase (either through Hocus Pocus or directly from you)? If so, is it the wooden model or the metal one that you mentioned? Kent

Hi Kent
I am no longer selling it, however, I do know Hocus-Pocus have one wooden version left. After that is gone then that will probably be it for a while. Paul

I just spoke to Paul Gross at Hocus-Pocus and all of my briefcase illusions they had have been sold.
If enough magicians are interested and PM me or email me, so I get an idea of who is interested, I will look at releasing the plans. I have been in contact with a professional illusion designer who has offered to do them professionally. It is very expensive so to make it worth my while I would like to get an idea if anybody out there might be keen on purchasing the plans. Paul
