Vinny, I like your count too.
Here is a link to alternate way to accomplish what an Elmsley count does. I don't like it better, it's just different. Some people find this handling easier for them to do. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40TA2y3us8k Glenn

Seriously, I can see why people may find it easier to learn, I always thought the Jordan count was simpler to learn than the Elmsley. Vinny's Rollover count is nice and deceptive too. The Elmley however has more versatility, but there's nothing wrong in ringing in changes where we can occasionally. Paul. |

Hi Tim,
I'm glad you like the variation. This was something I discovered while messing around with 4 cards last October. Obviously at that time I had no idea if it was a reinvention of someone else's variation on Elmsley's count or if it was something new. I sent a video clip to Jon Racherbaumer who had not seen the count before and suggested I call it "Casper" (the friendly ghost count) I thought that was a clever name because I do think it is easier to learn to do well than an Elmsley count. I called it "In Lieu of the Elmsley Count." I also posted a link to the count in "Secret Sessions" to get some feedback and see if anyone had seen it published anywhere before. Thomas Wayne suggested I contact Wesley James because Wesley is very knowledgeable in this area and also published a book on counts called Pasteboard Perpensions. Here is part of Wesley's reply to my email after seeing my variation. "Congratulations, you reinvented the Elm-Jor Count that I included in my notes in 1989 but elected not to include when I published my dissertation on Counts, in 1990, when I released Pasteboard Perpensions. I elected not to include it because it employs the same mechanics as my Carry Count, which is included, and the Houghton-Haxton Count (Ultimate Color Separation). Moreover, while it conceals the same card as the Elmsley Count, creates the same resulting packet order as the Elmsley Count and, notwithstanding your assertion that it is easier--a subjective judgement--it has the disadvantage of the numeric distribution of cards being incorrect for the stage in the count in which it occurs. Thus, I considered it inferior to the Elmsley Count with no benefit over the Elmsley Count." (Wesley then graciously went on to say) "You are, of course, free to publish your discovery..." I am finding that the more I play with this count the slower and more open I can make the display. The video clip didn't really exhibit these characteristics but it wasn't really designed to do anything more than show the mechanics. I have shown this variation to a few friends who were having trouble learning to do a convincing Elmsley Count and they found this variation easier to do well. I doubt I will personally switch to this variation as my preferred method to do Elmsley's count though. So... there you have it. More than you ever really wanted to know about this obscure variation of Elmsley's Ghost Count. Have a good day gentlemen. Glenn

Interesting - one of the items in a new book (that hopefully should be available soon - mostly new stuff) there's one small section of "counts," including different EC handlings.

Hi Leo: It's got about 51 items in it and 241 photos. Some stuff I've been holding back for many, some for MANY, years, because I wanted to keep 'em to myself. Great stuff - in my obviously biased opinion. All impromptu, any deck, card stuff. So, mostly never-seen-before stuff, and a section called "Personal Collection Section" - my re-write and updating, changing, a few items from PERSONAL COLLECTION, since PS won't be re-printed and I'd published a limited number. You're on my e-mail address list, Leo, so you will be receiving an email copy (Attachment) of the full-page ad for that book when it becomes available. That might be for quite a while. Anyone who is not on my list and wants to be notified - just send me your email address - to my personal email address, first one listed under this post. Thanks for your support, Leo. Best - HL.
