I couldn't find a place to post this, so I thought it was most suitable here.
I was wondering how you secure your backstage area from people before, during and after your show. Do you post no entry signs, lock doors, bring body guards/event security. I've seen all these methods and I was wondering which works best for you. Thanks |

I guess it really depends on the situation. I usually travel with one of my girls and if it's a small show, we just take turns changing .. this way things are not left unattended. If it's a bigger show at a theater, there should be adequate security provided by the theater staff. Unless of course, it's the staff you're worried about.
If we have to leave the venue for some reason, we usually pack up the "secret" stuff. If it's valuable .. then it comes with us. Just use your commons sense. Steve |

I would do the same as Chezaday but if your doing a big stage show, I would hire event security.

Why, I don’t know, but it always seems to be the other magicians on the program that somehow feel the need to examine and handle props, trip over tables and illusions, or absentmindedly back into my pre-sets.
Other variety acts are generally respectful of “set areas” and don’t touch or knock over things. But, somehow other magicians just can’t resist a peek or jiggle, or are so unaware of their personal space they often collide with other’s stuff. I thought I was the only super paranoid performer, until McBride and I watched each other’s props on a few occasions, as Jeff seems to have the same “ooops, sorry” Karma with people upsetting things that I do backstage. I try to stay, or have an assistant or colleague stay with my tables and illusions, and stand at least two-feet in front of them to catch the passersby who trips and fall forward into them. I’ve found that signs only lure others to the area, and not deflect the curious. Magically, Walt |

I've always found "danger high voltage" signs to be effective...

I post my own "no entry" signs at my productions and issue a list of the ONLY names who should be backstage. This list virtually excludes anyone not involved with the dirct performance/production. No sponsors, no management, and even more importantly, NO FRIENDS etc. The backstage area is a busy place before and after the show, and it can be dangerous, this is the reasoning for the strict rules which I explain to anyone who asks.
And TRUST ME, I enforce this rule. Blair

When I performed I usually bring a team to guard my props, they also the same team who's gonna unpacked my illusions. In my country, we don't have a theatre building for a shows, in this case my management always put an extra "secret" room for my illusions in my riders.

I have 3 main male assistants. They are each assigned what prop to assemble. They take turns in assembling the props according to size and difficulty inside a large spider curtain. EVERY illusion has a black cloth that covers the entire prop. This is also used to shield IT from other backstage crew and performers before and after the show.

I use screens to cover my props backstage, they can be assembled to different sizes and can even fold around the props and lock at the front, with a no entry sign. This works well with theatres, especialy if you are a side act on a production, gives me my little private space I also use to load my doves with no one seeing.
