We don't ask people (most of the time) to borrow a deck of cards. In "Strong Magic", Ortiz actually makes a point of this under "Dramatizing Conditions". Of course it's all a question of how far you would want to go to make your effect convincing, but it does make the effect more convincing if the deck is borrowed. Or the coins for that matter. The next best thing to magic with borrowed objects is magic with objects the spectators are so familiar with that they don't question them. I totally see the point that 100 years ago half dollars and dollars were very common and most coins would be made of silver and that this would make the effects more convincing. |

I understand the US mint is coming out with 4 different pennies. Now, I don't know of many effects with pennies (I'm sure they are out there) except like something from "The Magic Book" by Lorayne where you count seven or so pennies into the spectators hand and penetrate one.
Anyway, will having multiple pennies in circulation bother anybody? Matt H.

I also have a few routines I can do with quarters, borrowed or otherwise. In a casual situation the use of familiar items can strengthen an effect. And its good to have a few things you can do when you don't have anything with you. |
