Corus 2009. Anybody been following it? A few shocks & surprises. Chucky is in bad form and Morozevich and Sasikiran have both played so horribly they must have over-indulged in Amsterdam on the way to Wijk aan Zee.
2 rounds to go. 4 leaders in group A. Magnus has Smeets and Yue, so he's still a chance - He's my favourite seeing as Mickey Adams drew his way out of contention... Group B. Nosher in the lead!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He's got a tough opponent in Caruna for one of his final 2 matches and he's only 0.5 in front. Even if he does win, he might not take up the offer for next year's group A as he said he'd rather subject himself to physical dismemberment than play in the A Group! Good luck, Nige. Group C. What a slugfest this has been. Very few draws in each round. Wesley So in the lead, but once again only by 0.5. And it looks like Anish Giri will jump straight from FM to GM as a result of his wins at this tourney. At 14. Rotten little kid.

Nosher looks great in group B, I'd love to see him in Group A next year.
Magnus Carlsen has been solid but boring. What happened to impetuous youth? Let's hope he doesn't turn into Kramnik Jr. But what about Dominguez Perez carving up the mighty Aronian? Looking for a great finish. John

On his blog, Magnus' dad tells the story of Harald HÃ¥rfagre and how he refused to cut his hair until he united all of Norway. He stopped blogging until the end of the run of draws Magnus was having (as he says: "(choosing the blog as weapon as my current hair growth doesn't lend much credibility to any threats in that direction)").

A smooth win by Carlsen. He made every move look inevitable.
Aronian-Morozovich is still going on, and looks pretty exciting. Aronian sacs a p and looks to have all the play. I hadn't been by the site for a few days, thanks for the reminder, Nosher. John

What a tourney! Final round coming up:
A: 6 players tied for the lead - unbelievable B: Nosher & Kasimdzhanov tied for the lead. Go Nigel go. C: So can't be beaten, only tied with if wunderkind Giri wins and So loses. Maybe Topa, Anand and Kramnik should stay away more often...

Poor old Nosh, played a great middlegame and missed a win with an underpromotion, then missed the perpetual that would have given him the group win and finally, lost.
Caruna's off to the A group next year. I thought Magnus had a little pressure but it seemed to vanish while he was trying to flag his opponent. I don't know why he kept playing on in that lost endgame - probably angry with himself. Congrats too to Karjakin and So.
